Texas Faith - Commander in Chief or Preacher in Chief

Is God a villain of Jeb Bush, Carson, Kasich, Fiorina, Paul, Huckabee, Santorum and others? Is God a friend of Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio?
Here is my write up at Dallas Morning News  published February 16, 2016.
MIKE GHOUSE, Foundation for Pluralism
My father’s words jumped at me when I read the phrase, “outward professions of faith.”
He was a mayor as well as a respected uncle of the town, and everyone came to him with their problems for solutions. It was a small town called Yelahanka, a suburb of Bengaluru, India. Obviously the majority was Hindus, but we had Muslims, Sikhs, Zoroastrians, Jains, Christians and the Dalits.
Every time someone came and said, “Believe me, I am a good Christian, Hindu, Muslim or a ….” My father’s ears would perk up, and he would become extra vigilant. After the individual left the house, he would tell my mother, “I am still waiting for an individual who would say, I am an honest guy and I have this problem with the other person. He would add I rather believe the person who does not profess “outward professions of faith”; Why does he need to use God or a religious shield?
Indeed, my ears perk up when I encounter those who wear their religion on their sleeve. In fact, a handful of imams, rabbis, priests, and pastors have not failed me in my caution, no one has robbed me, but they have not been truthful to their congregations in my interfaith interactions with them.
When Ted Cruz said, “Let me first of all say, to God be the glory” and Marco Rubio uttered “my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Is God favoring these two over others? Is God a villain of Jeb Bush, Carson, Kasich, Fiorina, Paul, Huckabee, Santorum and others?
God expression should be personal and not for public consumption. God loves each one of us equally and does not favor one over the other. If he does, we don’t need a prejudiced, discriminatory God like that. Would God place an individual in the White House to carpet-bomb civilians elsewhere or bomb the nations to the ground? Heavens no, God is not in the business of bombing people. He has given us the discretion: Some get it, and some don’t. We the people need to elect those who are determined to preserve harmony of the creation be it among individuals, between nations and the environment.
When God created animals, he gave them horns, fangs and paws to settle their disputes with an attitude of you survive or I. But when he created humans, he did not give us fangs, paws or horns to fight, but a tongue to talk and resolve our disputes. Anyone who wants to bypass talks need not be our president.
Cruz and Rubio (and others) are running for public office and not the pulpit. I have seen politicians of all religions deliberately use God in their language. It may be a part of their nature to make God expressions, but when they say it in public, making it obvious for the camera, I question their sincerity. Maybe God is all that’s left to rescue them rather than their record or their abilities. Should I trust a candidate because he or she invokes God or because he or she is capable?
Please don’t invoke God in the public for the purpose of show, unless you are God deficit and need God to side with you to hurt others.

What is Islam?

Islam is a beautiful system, like all other faiths devised to restore sanity and common sense in a given society through simple basics like building trust, being truthful, be a security to fellow beings, stand up for justice, practice non-judgementalism,  jettison arrogance and adopt humility, and kindness.

These are the seven principles of building cohesive societies
where no human has to live in apprehension or fear of the other,  indeed that is the foundation of Islam and a few Muslim have forgotten it. We have to restore it now for building a cohesive world, where people live their lives and let others live theirs.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) laid that foundation, and those seven principles made him an Amin, an individual who lives his life per those principles.  Unfortunately, a
few have made Islam to be a political system, which it is not. Indeed, sadly all religions have become political systems of you or me, rather than spiritual system of we are in this together.

Preparing a talk on the subject.

Blaming the west, no one can cast the first stone.

http://theghousediary.blogspot.com/2011/06/blaming-west-no-one-can-cast-first.html

The below referenced items was published in one of my groups. It is an open forum and we have members of several different religious tradition in it including Jews, Hindus, Christians and others from across the world. Anyone can become a member by sending an email to WorldMusilmCongress-subscribe@yahoogroups.com All are welcome. My policy is to publish all opinions relating to the topics from extreme right to left, so we can understand all points of view. When I don’t agree with an opinion here and there, I do express my disagreement on an equal basis with the others.

A few individuals blame the west for the ills of the society, as one puts it “the westernism ideology or “economic imperialism”. I have time and again expressed that “evil” does not have a monopoly of any one, east or west, Muslims, Christians or any one. His opinion is his own as mine is my own.  Evil is an inherent part of every society and has always existed and will continue to be a part of every group, be it religions, nationalistic, ethnic or any other formation.  If evil was not crated none of the religions were needed. The religions have come into being to minimize the evil, a majority of people get the message a few don’t;  The piece “
World's Most Dangerous Place for Women Published by Aljazeera English 6/15/11”  throws the “holier than thou” attitudes under the bus. Jesus was absolutely right; no one can cast the first stone.

The individual mirrors Pat Robertson, John Hagee, late Jerry Falwell and several others who have blamed Katrina and 9/11 on America for allowing Gays and Lesbian unions, pornography, abortion and other “evils” per them. They even said Arial Sharon’s illness was God’s punishment to him for agreeing to give Gaza back to Palestinians. If these guys have the freedom they will act God and repeat Sodom and Gomorrah to our population that supports GLBT and Abortions.

Even though Pat Robertson has a huge audience, not all of his membership agrees with him, so was with Falwell, although many a presidents listened to these men. Heck, a majority of Christians do not subscribe to their view and hence their views are not Christian views. The individual on our forum no different. He has his own following but that is not the opinion of all Muslims – I for one differ on his take on this issue, however, our group is democratic, we allow all opinions and that is the right thing to do.
Men have stood up against oppression of women in a variety of forms; female feticides, female genital mutilation, trafficking, prostitution, job discrimination and gender biases. I am not only condemning it, but speaking up as well. I am a member of many a women groups as a support and to stand with them.
It is a shame what is happening with women all around the world, and particularly in Iran, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Congo, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. As man I condemn it and share that condemnation with my groups. Many a members of the group, both male and female are actively working to mitigate this menace. Blessed are the peace makers and I urge for us to realize that we cannot single out any group for the bad acts, all of us are responsible to uplift the society, let’s do our share.

Hello everyone!  I've sent this to every man listed in our email address book..  All men, Baha'i men in particular, must step up to the plate - LOUDLY - about this issue.  We know from the Writings that God has always recognized and wanted equality, and when considered for a moment, recognize that men cannot, repeat CANNOT raise to the peak of their spiritual best until this issue is resolved.

There are spiritual solutions to all of this world's problems - find them, grab them, act on them, teach them, and do not let go.

Lovingly, Mindy & Charles

P.S. Please research the ad, don't ignore it.  "If you're not a part of the solution, you are a part of the problem".

Subject: Re: MuslimsTogether :: Muslims are happy in the West

The below is an email I sent to an international Muslim Group (meant to send you a BC- but failed to do so).  We are continually bombared with negative images of the West for its morals -- some of these men are completely oblivious (or don't give a damn) about the women.  Please pray, and take whatever action you can to help women worldwide.  Blessings, Marylou

In a message dated 6/18/11 10:12:09 AM, Unity writes:

Has anyone polled women for happiness?  I have yet to see even one male address this abuse of women.  See below  -- I have cut for brevity --  research the entire article on line if you have the stomach for it.    The statistics on India are interesting - 40% of prostitutes are children.  Attacking the West does not solve the problem.  If anyone thinks it diverts our attention, you are mistaken.  Marylou

Source:  World's Most Dangerous Place for Women
Published by Aljazeera English 6/15/11

Afghanistan has been ranked as the world's most dangerous country for women, with Congo taking a close second position, a Thomson Reuters Foundation expert poll has said.

Violence, dismal healthcare and brutal poverty afflicts women in Afghanistan, while in Congo there are horrific levels of rape, the survey conducted by Trust Law, an arm of Thomson Reuters, said on Wednesday.

Pakistan, India and Somalia ranked third, fourth and fifth respectively in the global survey of perceptions of threats ranging from domestic abuse and economic discrimination to female foeticide, genital mutilation and acid attacks.

"Ongoing conflict, NATO airstrikes and cultural practices combined make Afghanistan a very dangerous place for women," Antonella Notari, head of women change makers, a group that supports women social entrepreneurs around the world, said.

The survey asked 213 gender experts from five continents to rank countries by overall perceptions of danger as well as by six risks. The risks were health threats, sexual violence, non-sexual violence, cultural or religious factors, lack of access to resources and trafficking.

Some experts said the poll showed that subtle dangers such as discrimination that don't grab headlines are sometimes just as significant risks for women as bombs, bullets, stonings and systematic rape in conflict zones.

"I think you have to look at all the dangers to women, all the risks women and girls face," Elisabeth Roesch, who works on gender-based violence for the International Rescue Committee in Washington, said.

"If a woman can't access healthcare because her healthcare isn't prioritized, that can be a very dangerous situation as well."

Afghan women have a one in 11 chance of dying in childbirth, according to UNICEF.

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), still reeling from a 1998-2003 war and accompanying humanitarian disaster that killed 5.4m people, came second mainly due to staggering levels of sexual violence in the lawless east.

More than 400,000 women are raped in the country each year, according to a recent study by US researchers. The United Nations has called Congo the rape capital of the world.

"The fact that the government is corrupt and that female rights are very low on the agenda means that there is little or no recourse to justice."

Pakistan ranked third largely on the basis of cultural, tribal and religious practices harmful to women. These include acid attacks, child and forced marriage and punishment or retribution by stoning or other physical abuse.

"Pakistan has some of the highest rates of dowry murder, so-called honour killings and early marriage," Divya Bajpai, reproductive health advisor at the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, said.

Some 1,000 women and girls die in honour killings annually, according to Pakistan's Human Rights Commission.

Trafficking of women

India ranked fourth primarily due to female foeticide, infanticide and human trafficking.
In 2009, India's then-Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta estimated that 100m people, mostly women and girls, were involved in trafficking in India that year.

"The practice is common but lucrative so it goes untouched by government and police," Cristi Hegranes, founder of the Global Press institute, which trains women in developing countries to be journalists, said.

India's Central Bureau of Investigation estimated that in 2009 about 90 per cent of trafficking took place within the country and that there were some 3m prostitutes, of which about 40 per cent were children.
In addition to sex slavery, other forms of trafficking include forced labour and forced marriage, according to a US state department report on trafficking in 2010. The report also found slow progress in criminal prosecutions of traffickers.

Up to 50m girls are thought to be "missing" over the past century due to female infanticide and foeticide, the UN Population Fund said.

Somalia ranked fifth due to a catalogue of dangers including high maternal mortality, rape and female genital mutilation, along with limited access to education, healthcare and economic resources ...

"The most dangerous thing a woman in Somalia can do is to become pregnant. When a woman becomes pregnant her life is 50-50 because there is no antenatal care at all. There are no hospitals, no healthcare, no nothing.

"Add to that the rape cases that happen on a daily basis, the female genital mutilation that is being done to every single girl in Somalia. Add to that the famine and the drought. Add to that the fighting (which means) you can die any minute, any day."

Poll respondents included aid professionals, academics, health workers, policymakers, journalists and development specialists"   (read the rest on line at site above listed)  END.

Circumcision; Jews and Muslim together

Calling it Male Genital Mutilation is going too far, it shows utter disregard for enduring religious traditions of Jews, Muslims and others comprising nearly a fourth of humanity. Mind you, it is not a practice of a vanishing cult that is here today and gone tomorrow. Continued: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-ghouse/circumcision-satire_b_872270.html

Hamas must be factored in peace talks

Talking with Beck, Hannity and OReilly does not produce peace for the people of Israel, it will aggravate it, but ensures them the short sighted audience numbers and enhanced ratings, that is really their bottom line. People of Israel and Palestine want peace, these guys are the hindrance.

The bottom line for the lobbies, and the right wing Christians and Jews is "sucking" money from the frightened ones and NOT the security of Israel, continuance of conflict ensure them their rewards and they have done it for over 50 years and it it in their interest to blame and accuse others instead of finding solutions.

The bull headed rightwingers lack sheer common sense, they expect to have peace in Israel without talking to the parties in conflict. If you want to have peace with the "enemies" then you talk with them.

If the same guys focus on mitigating conflicts and nurturing goodwill, they can achieve peace, they are passionate people with passion misapplied.

A Carrollton tradition
By Mike Ghouse, Pluralist
# # #

Dear Friends,
The following is an inclusive prayer called the prayer of Pluralism, indeed, Carrollton is only City in the United States where inclusiveness is appreciated and this is the 9th time in the last four years. We are committed to building a cohesive Carrollton.

Let’s reflect, wish and pray:

Creator of the universe
Please accept our gratitude in every name we call upon you; Manito,  Yahweh, Elahi, Ishwar, Allah, Mahavira, Buddha, Wahe Guru, Ahura Mazda, mother earth and Jesus Christ.

In your name we want to create a cohesive Carrollton, with care kindness and dignity to every one of the 122,000 residents of this beautiful City.

Dear God,

Guide our Mayor and the council to serve us with integrity and honesty;
Guide us to serve our communities with the spirit of volunteerism;
Guide us to do the right thing every moment of our life;
Guide us to open our hearts and minds toward our fellow beings;
Guide us to shed the arrogance in us, and enrich us with humility

Guide us to become conflict mitigaters and goodwill nurturers.

Dear God,
Protect our men and women in uniforms committed to our safety and well being.

Help us learn to respect the uniqueness you have blessed to each one of the 122,000 of us in Carrollton,

And help us learn to respect everywhich way one worships you.
In your name, we bow to you.
Amen.

First Amendment, the secular and religious organizations

Dallas Morning News - http://religionblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2011/04/texas-faith-does-special-legal.html
Religious Organizations must be held to the same standards as the secular organizations in terms of employment and accountability to the public. They must be subjected to audit of the policies as well, then the questions of exceptions will dwindle and a sense of clarity will emerge. We have to rise above our own petty agendas for the overall good of America, in our case and formulate policies that treat every one justly.

The employment situation with religious organizations does bring up issues in selection of the candidates; almost all the religious and secular organizations circumvent it by narrowing the criteria. In the coming years that may be tested out if the unemployment rates become unmanageable.

We have to consider the qualifications and nature of Job but that will begin the process of splitting hair and creates more conflicts and butting into the internal affairs of a religious organization.  What happens to equal opportunity employment laws, where does it stop?

Religion is like the nuclear power which can be beneficent in the hands of the righteous ones and destructive in the other.

A few religious organizations have refused to volunteer serving food to the homeless because the facility was managed by a Gay pastor.  How far can it go? Refuse to serve people who do not believe like you do? Is it our responsibility to prevent abuse of the scriptures to fit group’s agenda?  Should the majority ideas be forced on those who differ?  We should not forget the genesis of religions be it Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism or any ism, it always started as minority opinion and practices and because of their universal appeal it became a majority on a voluntary basis in their respective regions, should that makes us arrogant ?

There are some good examples as well, there is an Islamic school in Mumbai India, where some of the teachers are Hindus and they wear the full Hijab while on the school premises. There is another Madrassa in Bengal where Hindu Children are enrolling to learn about Islam, what if they remain Hindus and want to preach Islam? John Esposito is one of the most respected scholars on Islam in America, he is a devout Catholic, and he must have an equal opportunity to run Islamic Organizations, should he not?

Building cohesive societies to function smoothly and bring productivity to every human should be our civic responsibility.  Wasn’t that the call of Jesus, Moses, Muhammad, Krishna, Bahaullah, Nanak and others to create the kingdom of heaven? Didn’t they want societies where no one had to live with apprehension of others?
The world has indeed become a global community. Everyone is a neighbor to everyone else; we aspire to nurture the concept of good neighborliness in the world. The advisory board for World Muslim Congress will be represented by individuals from every faith. It is time for us to be equal citizens of one world; our home. This is a major paradigm shift in how the religious organizations would be conducting their business in the coming years.

My week in a glimpse, week ending Sunday, April 3, 2011.

Last week was great; Yasmeen and I celebrated our anniversary in the smoky mountains.

Visited my friend Mr. DD Maini (86), he and I connect like father and son. He is heading to India to Haridwar, a sacred place on the Ganges where he will take a dip in the holy water and I was thrilled to hear him say that he will do one dubki (dunking) for Yasmeen and I as well. He and I watched the last part of one of the greatest Cricket matches in 28 years leading India to victory.  India won the World Cup in Cricket playing against Sri Lanka. My enthusiasm is uncontainable, and I am pleased to have contributed towards the development of Cricket in North Texas.  I enjoyed it very much.

Shame on me, I have not visited my friend Everett Blauvelt, I hold him high like my Dad. He and Mr. Maini are very affectionate and caring human beings, both are over 85, Everett just turned 96. When I get back in town, that is the first thing I will do, visit them. When I talk with them, the are aware of everything I do... and that is amazing and I hope, I will retain that consciousness when I hit their age, and if I did.

Enjoyed the Kavi Sammelan (Poetry recitation in Hindi Language) it was humor packed and those guys made us laugh non-stop for three hours. I am life member of the International Hindi Association and it’s great to be a part of it. I must mention here one particular thing; that just about every program that India Association organizes and Hindi Samit does, it starts on time and ends right on time… a few people were leaving early despite requests from the Kavis to hang on for a few more minutes… they said they will close at 11:15, by God, it was 11:15. The program ended with a beautiful rendering… Mera pyara Hindustan..

Yasmeen was delirious; she was so excited to reconnect with her college friends from Dow Medical College, one is in Muscat and the other in Pakistan. She was literally on cloud 9 and I was happy to see her in that mode.

Richardson Faith Club meets once a month to exchange different thoughts on Faith issues, the topic this Sunday was sharing one’s spiritual experiences.  I shared my mine of getting baptized at the River Jordan in the spot where Jesus was baptized. It is quite a transformative experience. Please don’t jump to immature conclusions, (ask me before you engage in gossip) I am a Muslim and being a Muslim does not contradict experiencing the universality and the essence of prophetic traditions.

It was a joy for the people in the bus and my delight that the Imams who were on the bus followed me in the ritual, all of us were wearing the white robes (sort of what one wears during Hajj) and walking into the river and getting dunked by a Methodist Pastor. God is universal; he is neither a Hindu, nor a Muslim, Christian or a Sikh…  all religions are an expression of his love for his creation no matter where you live, he has reached you, no one is deprived of his blessings and his messengers.

I was thrilled to meet with Sultan Shahin, editor of New Age Islam from New Delhi, I went to see him for an hour and ended up spending seven hours, he is committed to enlightenment … we had incredible similarities on our take on Islam and the role of Muslims in the world; to be contributors towards peace and prosperity of humanity. Both of us are committed to nurturing the pluralistic values embedded in Islam.  It was a joy to connect with him and hope to work with him in organizing an international conference on hearing each other and caring for the planet.

My new part time business is slowly growing; I have not given much time to it, but it is growing.  I am looking forward to adding a healthy stream of income in the coming months.  There are some good investment properties on the market now.
Be ready for the biggest Unity Day celebration ever, I am determined to gather 1000 people including at least 20 Mayors, fire and Police Chiefs and state representatives and pull my Republican and Democrat congress persons together as a part of the unity. Every religion, ethnicity and race will be represented at the event. You must join us on 9.11.11 www.Unitydayusa.com If you know any one who can sponsor parts or part of full event, Please let me know. This is a moment to cherish, it is our contribution to our nation - to forge unity among people for a safe and secure America. I am looking forward to committed volunteers.

Talk at Vedanta Center, Irving

http://theghousediary.blogspot.com/2010/11/talk-at-vedanta-center-irving.html
It was a pleasure talking with members of the Vedanta Center, the knowledge society at the Vedanta Center in Irving, Texas organized by Pravrajika Brahmaprana. I have always admired Swami Vivekananda who is the fountain head of the Vedanta – Understanding the Wisdom of Bhagvad Gita and the Hindu Holy scriptures.

I spoke about my Journey into Islam and Pluralism, the concept of pluralism that is embedded in every religion. Every question raises the bar of knowledge for the presenter as well as the audience, and I am grateful for some of the most intellectual questions.

Brahmaprana presented me a book “Living at the source” Yoga teachings of Swami Vivekananda. Before I went to sleep, I opened the book and read the very first sentence, “Everything in the universe is struggling to complete a circle to return to its source, to return to its only source, the self.” Powerful!

The next line was from Mandukya Upanishad, “The is the lord of all, the knower of all, the inner controller. This is the source of all, the beginning and the end of all beings.” The Zoroastrian and Islamic traditions share this, “from the lord we come and to the lord we go” and the Wicca and earth based traditions substitute the word Lord with the word Earth.
While in India, that was one of the thoughts I was swimming in and out of, asking what makes us crave for the childhood food, the desire to see the home you grew up and I did drive by it, the joys of being with the family… the expression “coming home” is amazing. It is finding the comfort, a sense of connection and sense of being oneself. Physically it is like a magnet, the particles from the food, water and air that has made you initially are part of your system that has still the ability to connect with ‘your home magnet”
In the religious context it is subsuming oneself into the large cosmic energy. From God we come and to God we go. Indeed, the talk enhanced my own understanding of the craving for home and the universe around.
My talk centered on the self seeking balance, the crucial part of the creation – the matter is created with a built in balance where as humans are given the free will to seek that elusive balance.

Some six years ago, for two years on my radio show wisdom of religion, all the beautiful religions, Swami Nityananda Prabhu and I discussed Hinduism for over 100 hours, hour a week, as we did with ten other religions.

Should Christians (and other non-Hindus) beware of yoga?

Courtesy: Dallas Morning News, Texas faith Panel. The president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Albert Mohler, caused a stir with a recent column decrying the practice of yoga by Christians.

Mohler seems to be threatened with the popularity of Yoga, a beautiful practice to bring composure to oneself. He is obsessed with the idea that Yoga is a bait to lure his congregation away into “a spiritual practice that threatens to transform their own spiritual lives into a `post-Christian, spiritually polyglot’ reality”, and then he asks, “Should any Christian willingly risk that?” How mistaken can one be? Yoga is not a mutually exclusive practice, nor is it a religion; it is indeed a catalyst in achieving the union of mind and body that is central to all spirituality.

Yoga is neither Christian nor Hindu; it is a beautiful gift that originated in India for the benefit of mankind to function cohesively.  All individuals and nations should give and receive the good without labeling it.
