Babri Masjid: Lack of leadership among Hindus

By Mike Ghouse

Published at http://twocircles.net/2013dec13/babri_masjid_lack_leadership_among_hindus.html

Twenty one years ago, on December 6, 1992, the hypocrite Indians who call India their mother, ripped her apart. Not only they hurt the other children of that mother but destroyed their historic symbol; Babri Masjid.
Do we have a leader among Indians who considers every Indian to be an Indian, and nothing but an Indian?
In August of 2003, ten years ago, I talked about Ayodhya; here is clip from Mark Donald's Across the Divide in Dallas Observer, a lead story for that week.

“Ayodhya. It is an issue a lot of Indian-Americans shun talking about," Ghouse tells his radio audience. "But we must talk about it. We only know some aspects of the issue. When we learn all aspects, it brings some sort of resolution. It settles the dust in our minds, and when the dust settles, it gives clarity, peace of mind. It gives you freedom from the bondage of your prejudice."

On this issue, however, Ghouse can't resist offering his own opinion. He sees the problem as political rather than religious, exploited by Hindu extremists within the BJP to solidify their power. His idea is to defuse the problem through conciliation. "My suggestion is that Muslims should offer the land to build a temple for Ram. That is what a majority of Muslims in India feel. That is what a majority of Hindus feel. Let's not fight over an issue that is not going to help my children get education or get food on the table.

Quickly, he gulps some water and wipes a thin layer of sweat from his brow. "I will take your calls now. I will take all opinions, no matter how extreme, no matter how calm, no matter how agitated. All opinions are welcome."

The legitimate fear that holds Muslims from putting an end to this conflict is really not the land; it is the bent of the extremist politicians who want to dupe the common Hindus into believing that, to be a Hindu, one has to be anti-Muslim.

Of course India’s pluralistic ethos is deeper and has a solid foundation for the majority of Hindus to fall into the extremist politician’s trap, who want to wipe out everything that is Muslim. Thank God that is not the view of Hindu majority. However, the ones who scream the loudest get the hearing and corrupt the goodness of an average Hindu.

There are millions of Muslims out there who would want to live in harmony with every Indian regardless of his religion, caste or linguistic heritage, and that has been the tradition. Many of us want to be a part of building the Ram Temple and let go of the Mosque, but the blood thirsty politicians will not be satisfied with it, there is no end to their demands, they want more, and more and every pound of flesh from Muslims.
This is what is holding the nation. Do we have a leader among BJP who considers every Indians to be an Indian – no matter what that Indian eats, drinks, wears or believes? Do we have a Hindu leader who can rack up support to put an end to the harassment of Muslims, Christians, Dalits and other minorities in their daily conversations? Do we have a leader whose word is an iron clad guarantee that if Muslims walk away from Babri Masjid, they will not be pushed to give more and more? If there is a mai ka laal son of Bharat Mata, come forward, it will put an end to the conflict and we all can live our own lives and mind our own business.

The Indian Muslims are sick of the blame and the ugly comments hurled at them about India's partition, attacks of Ghazni on Somnath or the cruelties and Massacres of Aurangzeb. Many a parents teach their children to hate, and build biases against Muslims. It is not good for any one.

The Muslims of independent India are not responsible for the Partition, attacks of Ghazni or cruelty of Aurangzeb, just as the present day Hindus are not responsible for the past cruelties towards untouchables and burning of widows. This must be clearly understood and taught to bring Mukti (freedom) to both Hindus and Muslims from the bondage of the past.

Deep down, all humans seek justice and a balance in life, and without it, they are lost in sectarian warfare. As a member of the civilized nations, we need to collectively work towards building a cohesive India, where no Indian has to live in apprehension, discomfort or fear of the other -- an India where everyone is free to eat, drink, wear and believe whatever suits him/her.

What we need is trust building steps and Indians taking responsibility for their commitments. The Civility of a nation is measured by how she treats her women, children, and the ones in ditches, the minorities and the voiceless. An Australian professor shot back and wanted to know India's record.

Neither Indian, nor Australian or American system will score 100 in civility, but certainly it has the structure to contribute towards that goal, and if the rule of law prevails.

As a solution, India has offered reservations in jobs, and education system to those economically backward and those in the ditches to uplift them, we still have Sachar Report's recommendations to be implemented to uplift Muslims. We have to pull every one up from the ditches to a point from which they will be competitive. Harassment and Oppression of women continues female infanticide is a daily occurrence.

However, India's laws are equitable, the knowledge of which has not permeated into the whole society, nor its implementation occurs. Thanks to the internet and social media, the society will eventually monitor itself. You can be who you want to be in India. It’s a tough battle, but legally, our path is paved.

India's Future, Narendra Modi, Muslims and Moving Forward

The prosperity of India can be compared to a bus journey. If the driver ensures the air pressure is even in all its tires, the journey would become safe for its passengers. Similarly, if all the communities in a nation are on a level playing field, the prosperity of the nation becomes secure and sustainable.

Unfortunately, the majoritarian attitudes of a few harm India's harmony and adversely affect her prosperity. They harass, threaten and use violence to teach the minorities, women and the weak how to behave, and put them in their place. It is like letting the air out of one of the tires, hurting all of us in the end.

The 1984 Sikh Genocide, the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992, burning of Hindu Passengers in Godhra and Massacre of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002, the rapes of Nuns, Dalits and destruction of Churches are among the ugly cruelties we have witnessed since independence in 1947. It is a shameful blot on the civility of our Mother; India.

The anguish, suffering, apprehension and non-restoration of justice to the victims will continue to hurt the cohesiveness of India. As Indians, we need to set aside our pettiness and pull every Indian onto a level playing field, the more people we pull up, the greater the prosperity for all.

Narendra Modi, Muslims and India

NARENDRA MODI - MUSLIMS - INDIA AND MOVING FORWARD

My article is not easy on Modi or Muslim leadership, but offers a solution where everyone can move forward in life, particularly the ones who lost their loved ones, homes and livelihood. My focus is the Victims and their well being.

I am asking a few to obtain a statement from Mr. Modi to be included in the article, and ask you, any one of you, if you can offer a viable solutions - not accusations or blame, but solution to be included as your statement. It's open to all Indians.

If you can get it all for me before 10/27/30. I will use my discretion to use your statement, if I cannot, it will be still a part of the statement in the article that will be posted here at www.TheGhousediary.com and http://MikeGhouseforIndia.blogpost.com

Questions about Modi

The article Mr. Narendra Modi, you have a choice was published at the Indian Muslim Observer (http://www.indianmuslimobserver.com/2012/06/latest-editorial-mr-narendra-modi-you.html) has generated a lot of questions. Here is a summary of the questions and my responses.

Question: Do you think Mr. Modi will ever apologize for his misdeed of the 2002 Massacre?

Ghouse: God gives an opportunity to his creation to repent and ask for forgiveness, it’s an act of easing out of the accumulated anguish (guilt), and restoring the spiritual and psychological balance from within. God is kind, merciful and extends the date for apology and gives a life time of opportunity to seek repentance. There are examples from Prophet Muhammad’s practice, where someone sought forgiveness on his last breath and prophet said, God will accepts that. However, God withholds judgment till the Day of Judgment. No one goes scot free; everyone bears the burden of his karma in one fashion or the other.

As Indians and as Indian Muslims we have many choices, some of them are:
Write him off as a man who would not apologize and engage in a life long battle with him in defeating at every opportunity and place. The down side is finding the resources and time for it.

Our time can be well spent in restoring the lives of the victims of the 2002 massacres. What Indians and Indian Muslims are seeking is justice to the people, and that really should be the bottom line and not Modi’s pound of flesh.

Forgive him unconditionally. A few Indian Muslims may oppose this off the bat even though the Qur’aan says clearly that Allah loves the person who forgives the most. There is wisdom in it and goes towards building a cohesive India that is good for all Indians.

When the Ulemas or religious and civic leaders gather in thousands, as they have done on different occasions, include forgiveness to Modi as one of the items of their agenda; let this be a highly publicized event with the media in full gear.
Invite the national media, and the key leaders from all communities including BJP leadership, let each one of them speak for five minutes about their take on forgiveness and its consequences.

Then at the appointed time, make the announcement that Muslims are forgiving the men involved in the 2002 Massacre including Modi and want to put this behind and focus on pulling the victims out of destitution and restore their hopes and lives. All speeches must be geared for national reconciliation and goodwill.

Invite Mr. Modi to attend the program, don’t be disappointed, if he chooses not to participate, but if he does, honor him,  and let him know that Muslim are forgiving him as of now with no conditions.

Make an appeal to Modi.
Dear Narendra Bhai,

You have a moral responsibility to the well being of every citizen of Gujarat, whether they personally elected you or not, you still represent them.

Your fellow Gujaratis were massacred under your guardianship, and I hope you feel their pain and anguish.

Narendra Bhai, you have many choices; one among them is repentance, the praischit, and I urge you to seriously consider it. It is the Michami Dukadam of your life that is seeking forgiveness and forgiving others for any grudge you may harbor against others. Right now, you have a choice to start your spiritual and political life with a clean slate.

This means making good with the people who have suffered under your leadership; it will bring Mukti (salvation) to you. The other choice is to resign and show the strength of your character.

Your moral character in the only sustainable legacy you can leave behind, and not the wealth you create for a few. Gujarat has been around and will always be there with or without you, and I hope you are humble enough to see it.

You may consider working on earning genuine respect from every Gujarati, particularly the downtrodden living in the refugee camps. Uplift their lives. You will be uplifting a huge moral burden of fellow Guajarati and fellow Indians. Your honesty and integrity will be transparent in how you handle the situation.

As a leader of one of the industrially advanced states, you have a duty to establish Gujarat as a state that respects law, where justice will be served to every Gujarati, whether they live in a Jhompdi (Huts) or the castle. Every Indian should feel safe, as the law would take care of the wrong doers. You need to express your courage to speak up and follow dharma, the right path.

You can begin by mustering the courage to apologize to the citizens of Gujarat and restore their lives and bring justice to them. It will bring peace to every Gujarati and every Indian. It takes a man to do it, and I hope you are man enough to do it and turn things around for the 16000 men and women living in refugee camps. Do them good, restore their life and earn their goodwill. Once they see the results of restoration of a genuine man, they will forgive you and support you and, they will stand up for you, if you stand up for them.

Question:  Should a person like Modi who is known for his partisan role and
for being anti-minorities be projected as a candidate for Prime
Ministership of a secular and multi-religious country like India?

Ghouse: Yes, if he apologizes on his own, and there shall be no compulsion. Again, listen to the wisdom of Qur’aan, freewill endures, compulsion is short lived. Apology in words will not cut it, it has to be followed by action by uplifting the downtrodden living in the refugee camps and bringing a positive change in their lives. If their lives are restored and Muslims feel genuinely hopeful, then Modi should be given the chance. The bottom line is not revenge, but restoration of justice to the people to whom injustice was done.

Question: Prestigious "Time Magazine" and Brookings Institution have lauded
Modi in recent days. What do you think- was it not wrong on their part
to shower praises on such a controversial man known for caring a damn
about human rights and human values?

Ghouse: Times and Brookings institution failed in their responsibility to write an objective report, which is challenged anyway. Modi’s men are working diligently, spending the time and money to project Modi as the leader of India. I believe both the institutions were unduly influenced and have lost their respect for integrity. I wish Modi’s men had spent that money and time in helping the refugees out of the squalor and put them in homes.

Questions: Do you see the gulf between Hindus and Muslims in Gujarat will
narrow in near future?

Ghouse: Nothing will ever change if everyone sits around and expects miracles. Miracles will not happen. God helps those who help themselves, its God’s promise to mankind including Muslims. There are a number of things Muslims can do – develop good relationships with fellow Guajaratis. Get involved in the civic affairs of the state and be a part of everything every Gujarati does. Ask Muslim to write columns in how to improve the bonding and relationships with fellow Guajaratis. I will be happy to write it, but there are many out there. Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer and a Gujarati Doctor who lived in the United States are doing a great job in writings articles to bring the communities together. I just cannot think of his name now, but he and I have had correspondence once a year. He can really guide Muslims.

If there is a conflict, blame the individual and not the religion. It will contain the conflict to individual and will not spread. It is a culture that has to be developed and established, it will take some time.

Here was an advice from my father. During the communal riots in Jabalpur in the early sixties, both Muslims and Hindus were killed in the mayhem. I wish every father in India, teaches the following lesson to his kids, as my father taught me. He told us that the "individuals" are responsible for the bloodshed and not the religions; he was very clear. He said, you cannot blame the nebulous understanding of religion and expect justice. The individuals responsible for disturbing the peace should be punished under the law, and a resolution to the conflict must result by serving justice. He said you cannot annihilate, kill, hang or beat a religion, then why bark at it? It is not the religion; it is the individual bad guys that are the problem.

Crime is always committed by the individuals, and each individual must be brought to justice to restore faith in the society. When you believe that your rights will be protected by your government, you feel safe and secure and that is how you build cohesive societies.

The role of a Muslim is to mitigate conflicts and nurture goodwill. If you study Prophet’s life from this point of view, you will see that was the main drive. I give a speech on the topic, Insha Allah, when I visit India, I will be happy to give a talk on the topic.. . . . . .

Deoband Chief's love for Modi fails to get Muslim approval

We must be proud of our community to have diverse views on the subject of Narendra Modi; it is democracy flowing in our veins. Indeed,   it is the healthiest thing do in working towards building cohesive and sustainable societies.

We may want to see facts on the ground, massacre and the merciless treatment of fellow Indians who were Muslims, what they are reduced to and what is the hope for them?

Any concession to Modi amounts strengthening his tyranny and legitimizing his crimes. Those of us living outside Gujarat have to remember that they have to live and work amidst hostility, what are their choices? As Muslims should we dig in our heels and cause the Modies to dig in too?

Do we want the status quo to continue or change? How do we improve? Those who have lost their loved ones have a very difficult position than those of us who are remotely affected.

This is one of the most difficult of all issues and we have to work on mitigating the conflicts and nurturing goodwill.  We need to value the statement of Dr. Zafrul Islam instead of jumping on him.

We cannot afford to remain confrontational; we need to continue to debate the statements without negating any opinion. Insha Allah, we will find a consensus through debates.

Malegaon: Rubbish, uncalled for, misleading and far from reality is what Muslim scholars and elites have termed Maulana Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi's statement praising Narendra Modi and the present situation in Gujarat.
Maulana Vastanvi's reported statement about Narendra Modi and the present situation for minorities in Gujarat appeared in the media today few days after he won the elections and became the Vice Chancellor of renowned Islamic Seminary Darul Deoband.
"Narendra Modi's hands are stained with the blood of hundreds of Muslims. Moreover, he never showed any remorse for his failure as Chief Minister during the Gujarat riots. Maulana Vastanvi's comments that appeared in today's newspaper are far from reality and lack credibility", Maulana Syed Mohammad Wali Rehmani said while speaking to ummid.com on phone from Patna.
Maulana Syed Mohammad Wali Rehmani, head of Khankahe Rehmania, Munger and Vice President of All India Majlise Mushawerat was reacting to the Maulana Vastanvi's statement praising Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi that appeared in a leading Indian English daily today morning.
In the statement that the daily termed as 'the most significant endorsement of Modi', Maulana Vastanvi has said all communities are prospering in Narendra Modi's Gujarat, and there is no discrimination against the minorities in the state as far as development is concerned.
Advising Maulana Vastanvi to clarify his stand, Maulana Rehmani said, "At the time when evidences after evidences are coming out to prove the involvement of Hindu right wing organizations in terrorism, one should think twice before opening the mouth".

Deoband alumnus and Director of Markazul Maarif, Mumbai Maulana Burhanuddin Qasmi while denouncing Maulana Vastanvi's statement said, "What Maulana Vastanvi has reportedly said about Narendra Modi and the present situation in Gujarat is absolutely rubbish and far from reality."
Stating that Maulana Vastanvi should have avoided giving such statement as the VC of Darul Uloom Deoband, he said, "He is from Gujarat and might be needing 'support from the government' to run his institutions in the state. He is free to do that in his personal capacity. But as the VC of Darul Uloom, his responsibilities are much more. He should refrain from issuing such absurd statements."
Gen Secretary of All India Milli Council, Mumbai Maulana Mehmood Daryabadi while expressing shock over the statement said, "Darul Uloom Deoband is an Islamic and religious seminary and it has never involved itself in politics. Maulana Vastanvi's statements are uncalled for and by issuing such statement, he has degraded his post."
Questioning the motive behind Maulana Vastanvi's statement National Integration Council NC) member Naved Hamid said, "Of late, every businessman and those who have 'resources' and 'money' are coming out in support of Narendra Modi. They are doing so perhaps to safeguard their interests."
"If Narendra Modi is providing equal opportunities to every one", he asked, "Why he is not interested in minority development schemes for minorities in Gujarat? Why instead of pushing the justice to those who suffered during the riots and killed in dubious encounters, his government is taking all efforts to bail out the culprits?"
Meanwhile, ummid.com's repeated attempts to contact Maulana Ghulam Vastanvi failed. However, he found a supporter in Editor of New Delhi based The Milli Gazette Dr. Zafarul Islam Khan.
"One may disagree with what Maulana Vastanvi said about Narendra Modi and Gujarat. But I think the situation has improved for the minorities in Gujarat and Maulana Vastanvi's observation is appropriate and good for the community in the present scenario", he said while speaking to ummid.com on phone from New Delhi.
