Pope Mania – Random Notes

Pope Francis | TheGhouseDiary.com
Pope Francis has become one of the most influential individuals in my life since March 2013. He is a genuine pluralist, and no one falls outside the ambit of his love and caring.

I was watching CNN this morning addressing the prisoners in Philadelphia and randomly made a few notes.

Jesus restored dignity to the prisoners, indeed when a man like Pope takes the time to be with the socially condemned, and in the past he has washed their feet – a symbolic gesture of humility… what should go thru the minds of those prisoners?

As a society our systems condemns the wrong doer, and rarely do we make an effort to give him or her their dignity for the sake of giving a normal life, instead we are focused on punishing him or her, which we should, but we should also consider redeeming them.  After all we should listen to Jesus and condemn the sin and not the sinner.

Thank God, and I thank my parents, I have zero prejudice, and limit my dislike to the actions of the individuals but never ‘them’ or those who are related to them.  It pains me to see bias and prejudices against fellow beings. Of course, I am guilty of occasional fractions myself.

I've bashed Ben Carson for his wrong statements but not him, and I am guilty of being excessive at times.  However, the other day I met a Christian academic whom I have put on pedestal for his pluralistic approach to religions, but was sorely disappointed when he put down Carson’s faith – he said, I don’t understand why an intelligent man like Carson would join a cult (Carson’s religion, I believe it is the 7th day Adventist) and that, I have not been able to digest it.

Listening to Pope is reassuring to me and encourages me that I'm ok... sometime I feel I have no place in the society when people around me are loaded with subtle to blatant Anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, Hinduphobia, Misogyny, Homophobia, Xenophobia and other ills of the society. When will be free, I ask myself with no answers.

You will be redeemed must have a profound effect on the prisoners; it gives them the hope to consider living their lives like all other humans.  Quran invokes regularly not to judge other people’s faith, and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) says, one has the opportunity to seek forgiveness till his last breath, it’s between him and God. Quran adds that the person whom God loves most is the one who forgives.  I pray, we all understand the wisdom and make a habit to forgive and seek forgiveness.

Pope Francis is a genuine follower of Jesus, Muhammad and all the great prophets and spiritual leaders who wanted to build cohesive societies.

While this was going on, I said to my wife, if you want to understand me, study this man Pope, I am driven by similar guidance. Then I made the comment, the only thing left for me to find out if he is against death penalty, which I am, of course that is whole another discussion.  Like a miracle, within two minutes the anchor on CNN announced that Pope is against death penalty. That bonded me firmly and I told her that I have to go on a pilgrimage to visit the pope and do my share of work in reconciliation between different faiths.
I have written over 25 pieces about the pope, a few are listed here and in the links within.

Are Muslims a part of the American society?

Yes, we are. Indeed, one of the most exemplary American Muslim stories of the post 9/11 era happened in Louisville, Kentucky just this month.

On September 16, 2015, a few miscreants painted hate symbols on the River Road mosque in Louisville. When the local community at large found out about this, nearly 1000 people from main stream and disparate ethnic communities came to the mosque to show their solidarity with Muslims, and they joined in the community cleanup and re-painting the mosque.

This act of support was not just out of a sense of justice, compassion or help for the underdog, but clearly out of enduring friendship, which is the most reliable relationship, not bound by time or situation.  The America Together Foundation congratulates Dr. Babar Cheema and the Louisville Muslim leadership, which has nurtured a relationship of friendship and trust with the local community over many years.

As time permits, we will write more about this, and we hope it becomes a model for other American Muslim communities, just as different communities have successfully dealt with Rev. Terry Jones in Mulberry, Florida who wanted to burn 2998 copies of Quran, and Rev. Robert Jeffress of Dallas, Texas who called uncivil names about Quran and the Prophet.  Indeed, we need to keep a record of our contributions to the well being of America, there is so much to be proud of our work.

With love and caring for our neighbors, no American can go wrong. The America Together Foundation has assigned me with responsibility to work on building a cohesive America.
There are so many Muslims out there who have contributed and are contributing richly towards building a cohesive America, where no American has to feel alienated or fearful of fellow Americans.

In the end, this freedom from fear will bring peace and prosperity to our nation. Indeed, that is the essence of Quranic guidance in verse 49:13 which says God has created us into different tribes and nations and says, the best ones among you are those who learn and care about each other.  If we can learn to respect the otherness of others and accept the God given uniqueness of each one of us, then conflicts fade and solutions emerge.

Please tell us your story, where your acts have changes the minds of others, bringing us all towards a more cohesive America. Send us the details to us, and will help share it with the widest audience. Join us in our mission.

Have Faith in America, Carson and Trump are losers

HAVE FAITH IN AMERICA

DO WORRY ABOUT CARSON AND TRUMP
BUT DON'T LOSE SLEEP OVER IT

Relax and be assured, we have never elected extremist presidential candidates ever, Carson and Trump will fall by the wayside, if Trump makes it in the primaries, he will lose it in general election. The Math does not support these two.

Democracies in general and two party systems in particular have the voters divided into approximately 45/45 each party with about 10% independents or a variation there of. Then there is thing called Reagan Democrats or Obama Republicans, those who choose the sensible candidate regardless of their party affiliation.

In the general election, the silent but moderate Republicans will not vote for Trump or Carson and most of the Democrats will puke at them. Even the African American votes will not go to Carson for the negative comments he has made about the African Americans. The right wing Republicans who hate Obama, will support Carson just enough to delude themselves that they are not prejudiced.

Even the Republicans on the right have condemned Carson for his remarks, Senator Lindsey Graham has made the strongest case against Carson's opportunist rhetoric. Even Ted Cruz has not spared Carson. Bernie Sanders gave it to him.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He6NKZaHXLM

Carson will fall off the radar, when it gets down to serious business.
Trump will not make it in the general Election.

Each one of them is exceptionally good in their field of specialty,  what they can do as Surgeons or businessmen, they cannot do as politicians, they are not well rounded.

I was on Fox News today the 23rd of September with Stuart Varney and made these points:

Dr. BEN CARSON  has made 5 mistakes
When I get chance, I will expand on these bullets, and will also post the video interview.

1. Did not have faith in constitution. "That all humans are created equal."

2. Did not respect Americans. They will not elect anyone who holds extreme views about fellow Americans. Just because some one runs.

3. Does not believe that one is innocent until proven guilty - he assumes all Muslims are guilty.

4. Rev Martin Luther King, Jr would rebuke him for judging people for their character based on faith

5. Opportunist - when he saw trump gaining a few points by his uncouth rhetoric, he jumped in too to get his piece.

God Save us all, and God bless America!

Eid Mubarak, and it is time to reflect

Muslims to reflect on Eid-Al-Adha | TheGhouseDiary.com

Washington, D.C., September 23, 2015 - This Eid, unlike most of the festivities of the past is different.  American Muslims are reflecting on the status of humanity around the world; the Rohingya and Syrian Refugees Crisis is becoming unmanageable.

We have an obligation to take care of fellow beings, as well as expressing gratitude for what we have.  God calls on us to be grateful for whatever he has given us, and expects us to sacrifice whatever we can. He asks in Quran (55:8), "Then which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?

Sacrifice is willingness to give up beyond what is essential for our survival. It is about parents going to sleep without food but feeding their kids; it is clothing their kids while waiting to get their own. In case of extremities, we would rather get the bullet and save our loved ones, we are willing to rescue the child from a freezing lake risking our own life, and even strangers do that.

That is sacrifice: the willingness to value life of fellow humans over one's own, and the willingness to yield to greater needs of others than our own.

The act symbolizes our willingness to strengthen and preserve the world wide web of humanity, and help those who are in need. We recognize that all blessings come from God, and we should open our hearts and share it with others. That is indeed the guidance he has graced us with.

Those of you who have performed the Hajj more than once may consider donating an equal amount of the money spent on the 2nd and 3rd Hajj as Sadaqa to the refugees. God may be more pleased with it, as he consistently implores us in Quran to take care of fellow beings, which are his creation. Each one of us has an equal chance of becoming vulnerable and it behooves us to have sympathy for those who are down.

We suggest each Muslim to reflect on his or her own life, take care of oneself, and take care of fellow humans regardless of their race, religion or ethnicity.

Those who do not have the money to donate to the refugees, please consider giving up a soda or star bucks coffee a day or skipping one or two meals a week. Each Dollar adds up, it could be $50 Million from American Muslims if each one contributes $10.  This is the significance of Eid-al-Adha, the true sacrifice
.

On this Eid, please do not forget to thank and appreciate the policemen, firemen, (women included) and other service providers, they risk their lives to ensure our safety.  Take a moment to stop and appreciate them. We can change the community relationships by doing that.  Eid is the best opportunity to express our gratitude and that is part of our religion. I hope our Imams stress on this aspect of gratitude.  Please do that, it helps all of us build a better society. Would you send me your notes and reactions to include in next Eid write up?

My first Yom Kippur Service

 Washington, D.C., Lincoln Memorial.
September 22, 2015
Although I am involved with Jews and Judaism for a long time, and been to Synagogues, done most things... this was my first Yom Kippur attendance.
As usual I felt home with the group, I did not know the songs, but the idea is same whether it is Muslims singing Milaad, Hindus singing Bhajans, Sikhs singing Shabad or Christians doing Carols... the spirit is same, you feel at peace, connected with the self and some time sanctimonious.

The Rabbi from Philadelphia floored me, this would have been clearly my sermon - conversation revolving around building cohesive societies, justice and accountability. I fully connected with his sermon, he will share it soon, then you can see our expressions are so similar.

He was all praise for Pope and indeed said similar things I have said and written about Pope Francis.

I am writing for the 1000th time, Judaism and Islam are mirror images of each other. Sadly, like all other religions, these two are no exceptions in having people claim to follow the faith, but really they do not. If every follower of every religion follows his or her religion, there will not be any problem.

In the pictures, I have taken a picture of the card I filled, as every one was asked to fill.
Good experience, thanks to my friend Ilan Leibowitz for inviting me.

Article about Yom Kippur is similar the talks I have heard today.

Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah Greetings from American Muslims

Happy Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur | TheGhouseDiary.com

Washington, D.C., September 22, 2015 - American Muslims wish a very Happy Yom Kippur  to all of our Jewish friends across the globe.

Leshana Tova.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year that takes place in the month of Tishri and celebrates Creation.  Jews observe the Lunar Calendar, and as such the festivities occur 11 days earlier in each successive year on the Gregorian calendar.

On the day of Rosh Hashanah G-d opens the Book of Life and observes his creatures, and decides their fate for the coming year. What follows for the next 10 days is self-reflection to justify one's existence to God, a period called Shabbat Shuva, and on the 10th day, God closes your book and it is a time for the celebration; Happy Yom Kippur.

Indeed Muslims can relate this festivity with Ramadan where Eid is the capstone celebration at the end of a month long fasting and reflection. Jains with Paryushun, Hindus with Navaratri ending in Dussehra on the 10th day, and Christians with 40 days of lent thru resurrection on Easter.

Rabbi Michael Lerner writes, " We engage in honest, wrenching self-evaluation; we create practical strategies for changing in the future; and, as a result, the day cleanses us from the residues of past failures. "Kippur" in biblical Hebrew means "cleansing." We feel reborn, and that is a source of great joy. Indeed, this joyous rebirth is one of the reasons that the holiday of Succos five days later is called "the time of our joy."

Rabbi continues, "The same applies to all spiritual rejoicing: it must embrace the whole person, including the body. Of course it is not the food alone. The feast involves love and camaraderie for family, friends, and guests, as well as song and words of Torah inspiration. In that way, the pleasure of eating becomes part of the spiritual joy. But the joy is not complete without the food-without the body. "

In synagogues people pray to God to forgive them for their wrongdoings and to give them a good year - during the service a Shofar, or ram's horn, is blown, to alert congregants to the seriousness of the festival and the fact that God is deciding their fates for the coming year - which will be sealed on the Day Of Atonement ten days later.

May we all reflect on our lives and make a commitment to be a good human for the next year.  Happy Rosh Hashanah, and Happy Yom Kippur.

Pope Francis : Muslims welcome the Pope

Muslims welcome Pope Francis | TheGhouseDiary.com

Washington, D.C., September 23, 2015 – American Muslims are delighted to welcome Pope Francis on his first visit to the United States.

We have congratulated Pope Francis on the day he was ordained as the Pope, and had prayed he would herald a new beginning, building a world of understanding. As people of faith we welcomed him then and have been admiring him ever since March 13, 2013.

He is a genuine human being, and is a blessing to humanity.

Two thousand years ago, a man from Nazareth was bent on mitigating conflicts and building cohesive societies. He taught us to separate the sin from the sinner, and made it work by embracing sinners of the time; lepers and the prostitutes. Indeed, Pope Francis is following that man’s challenge of embracing the whole humanity.

Fourteen hundred years ago, there was another man from Mecca who was called a mercy to mankind.  His acts and teachings brought hope and relief to women, children, oppressed, poor, and the neglected. Indeed, Pope Francis is emulating that man’s model and embracing his ideals.

Pope Francis is an inspiration, and his embrace is the whole universe beyond political and religious lines.  He is a practitioner of pluralism espoused by Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh),  i.e., respecting the otherness of others and accepting the God-given uniqueness of each one of his creation. No one falls out of the ambit of his love, none at all.

There are a few deeply rooted conflicts among the Muslim-Christian, Jewish-Christian, Jewish-Muslim and Abrahimic-Hindu groups, some of them are irreconcilable, but not completely out of the realm of solutions. They flare up now and then in difficult expressions.  We believe Pope Francis will work on mitigating them.
During his speech in June this year, a smiling Pope Francis was quoted telling the Vatican’s guests that the Koran, and the spiritual teachings contained therein are just as valid as the Holy Bible. Indeed the essence of all faiths is accountability of one’s actions and how one cares for his neighbor.

Pope Francis is a symbol of humility and epitomizes what a religious person ought to be, caring, forgiving and loving all of God’s creation.

Dr. Ben Carson out- trumps Trump in Discriminatory Attitude.

Stuart Varney Show and a press release about Dr. Ben Carson | www.TheGhouseDiary.com

Washington, D.C., September 21, 2015 – Presidential hopeful Ben Carson stated on NBC’s Meet the Press yesterday, “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation,” and.” I absolutely would not agree with that.”

As an American Muslim, I was hoping that other Republican candidates for President would not out-trump, Trump in making inappropriate, ugly remark. Look who did it this time.  It’s Doctor Ben Carson. He is a great neurosurgeon and deserves respect, but he has crossed the line by advocating denying the right to a Muslim American in the future to be the president, a right which is guaranteed under the Constitution to all Americans who were born in the U.S., without regard to their religion.

He does not get what America is all about – You don’t indict an entire community for the criminal acts of a few.  He should know better as the African Americans have been the subject of discrimination and guilt by association for a long time.  If Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., was alive, he would not have been happy with Ben Carson for judging the character of others based on their faith alone.

Can Dr. Carson answer this question that was recently posed by a man from Dallas, "I am an African American Muslim born and raised in this great country; where am I in your vision of Making America Great Again?”

When Black Americans were enslaved, and did not have any rights, President Lincoln debated between being reelected and doing what is morally right; he chose the higher moral ground and issued the Emancipation Proclamation which began the process of freedom for millions of African-Americans. He will be remembered for eternity for standing up for the rights of all Americans, even a minority who did not have any rights at that time.

Later, the Women’s suffrage bill was passed, giving the usurped rights of women back to them. Now women from both major political parties are running for the Presidency. As we have progressed, we have restored the inalienable rights of all Americans and we cannot go backwards.

Mike Ghouse on Stuart Varney show on Fox News

I made the following five points, details and links to the video will be added later.

Relax and be assured, we have never elected extremist presidential candidates ever, Carson and Trump will fall by the wayside, if Trump makes it in primaries, he will lose it in general election. Math does not support these two.

Democracies in general and two party systems in particular have the voters divided into approximately Republicans/ Democrats/ Independents who can tilt the election. Then there is thing called Reagan Democrats or Obama Republicans, the moderates who will go the other way.

Donald Trump - Muslims have become the latest Punching Bag in the Republican Party Presidential Campaign for 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mike Ghouse 214-325-1916
Mike@American Muslim Institution.org
www.AmericanMuslimInstitution.org

Muslims have become the latest Punching Bag in the Republican Party Presidential Campaign for 2016

Washington, D.C., September 21, 2015 - An unidentified man, who spoke at the Trump town hall meeting in Rochester, New Hampshire, asked the mogul at the meeting on Thursday night. "You know our current president is one. You know he's not even an American" and then he went on spewing hateful tirade against Muslims.”

Donald Trump did not stop him.  He should have corrected the man as he started to insult our President, and then he went on lumping 1.6 billion Muslims with the ISIL terrorists in Syria and Iraq. Does he not know that several Muslim countries in the Middle East are a part of the U.S. led coalition currently engaged in military operations to destroy ISIL terrorists?

Can Trump answer this question for a man from Dallas, “I am an African American Muslim born and raised in this great country?” Where am I in your vision of Making America Great Again?

In 2008, a woman at a John McCain Campaign event insisted that Obama was "an Arab." "No ma'am," McCain replied. "He's a decent, family man, citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues."

We see the signs of desperation, when people resort to such insults; it shows they are operating from a position of weakness.  Americans are not stupid, Trump can try to tear America apart, but we are hopeful that people of goodwill will keep America together.   I hope Jeb Bush and other Republican candidates for President in 2016 call him out and do not out-trump his ugliness.
Ambassador Islam Siddiqui, President of AMI said, "As Americans we cannot remain silent, we call upon all the Presidential candidates to be aware that there are over 7.0 million peace-loving and hard-working Americans who happen to be Muslims.”

We hope Americans of all faiths will stand up for each others’ rights, which is the least we can do to build a safe and prosperous America for all.

AMERICA WINS WITH NEW MUSLIM GROUP

This week, a new Muslim group, the American Muslim Institution, or AMI, announced its existence and said it is going to be different than the other groups that are currently in existence, as this group will focus on America. AMI invited journalists, human-rights activists and other Muslims to the opening event at the National Press Club.
This was against the backdrop of American Muslim student, Ahmed Mohamed bringing a homemade clock to his engineering teacher in his Texas school. The talk media wires and websites were burning up this week with this question: Would the teacher have reacted the same way if this were a white student, or if this happened in New Hampshire or New York instead of Texas?
Although many on the far right think President Obama is a Muslim, most Americans believe he is a Christian and that he was taking a very Christian view of Ahmed Mohamed by inviting him and his homemade clock to the White House. President Obama wants to make America strong again, and he is doing this by encouraging young people to be part of an America that invents and values STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math.) Along with first lady Michelle Obama, he has encouraged women and ethnic and racial minorities to study STEM subjects while still in school and before college.
Ahmed Mohamed is a young American doing exactly what this White House has encouraged young Americans to do.
There certainly are other groups that focus on Muslim rights and concerns. The AMI leadership stated on Thursday that all the other groups do a great job, but AMI wants to focus on American issues. Mike Ghouse, AMI executive director, said, “The responses reflect the deep desire of the Muslim Majority for an inclusive Muslim organization that represents their ideals; i.e., to get along with everyone, minding their own business and to live and let others live. An organization that can make an effort to work towards fulfilling the promise of our immortal Declaration of Independence, that all humans are equal.”
The leadership said, to achieve that goal, “we are committed to be engaged with all Americans, regardless of their affiliations, liberal or conservative, Republican, Democrat or independent, religious or not. We are all in this together, and we must have the patience to get to a point where you and I are a part of society with similar aspirations to life, liberty and freedom. When we see each other’s patriotism with an open heart, conflicts fade and solutions emerge.”
AMI leadership said some of challenges concern different Muslim factions, but ultimately there is great patriotism among American Muslims. When addressing what many people think is violence committed by Muslims, AMI said:
“We can and should be doing more to speak out” and that they should reach out to media when these crimes are being committed in the name of Islam. AMI also said there has to be an end to the “appalling silence of good people” (quote from Martin Luther King).
Two Muslim members of Congress also spoke at the launch of AMI, Keith Ellison, D- Minn., and Rep. Andre Carson, D-Ind. Rep. Ellison addressed issues of concern to many minorities. He said only 12 percent initially voted for local officers in a Ferguson election, and that when voter when participation is low, services will also be low. He said, when the riots took place, African-American churchgoers were serviced by a Muslim physicians clinic and that this led to “trust, friendships, relationships and durable bonds of friendships.” He also said the Muslim community is part and parcel of the American scene, and that “we pay taxes.”
Rep. Carson said, “AMI adds to the diversity we share and that keeping our republic means that we have to push back against Islamophobia and terrorism.”
He added that there are many issues we’re facing, and individuals must speak up on problems such as climate change, protecting the homeland and making America safe for all. “We are monotheistic, but not monolithic,” he concluded.
This is not the first time we have seen such marginalizing of a religious, racial or ethnic group. Catholics at the turn of the 19th century were discriminated against, Jews later and certainly African-Americans. Now we add Muslims. We saw misery and hope this week. It would be good for America if hope wins out.
