Holocaust and Genocides commemoration

14th Annual Reflections on Holocaust and Genocides
Approx. 3:30 PM Sunday, January 27, 2019, | First Event at 2:00 PM
Jewish Muslim Perspectives on Mysticism at Islamic Society of the Washington Area
2701 Briggs Chaney Rd., Silver Spring, MD 20905

CLICK FOR:   RSVP | INFO | ABOUT

The Center for Pluralism and the World Muslim Congress are deeply committed to education and regularly bring Americans together to learn about each other’s joys and suffering. It is an initiative to build responsible civic societies, where justice and co-existence are our values.

The 14th Annual Holocaust and Genocides event is an effort to stand with all the men, women and children who have endured the apprehension of Holocaust, genocides, massacres, bombs, annihilation, land mines, hunger, rape, torture, occupation, and inhuman brutality.

The least we can do in the process of healing is to acknowledge everyone's pain in one voice. We have begun the process of coming together as one people and stand with each other, we are indeed one world and only humanity, and caring for each other bring safety and peace to all of us. I cannot be safe if the people around me are not, and I will not have peace if people around me don't. It is in my interest to seek a peaceful world for one and all.

There is a shameless cruelty in us, either we shy away from facing or refuse to acknowledge the sufferings of others, worrying that it will devalue our own or somehow it amounts to infidelity to our cause. We cannot justify massacres arrogantly believing that the victims deserved it or asked for it.

We have to learn and to acknowledge and reflect upon the terrible things we have inflicted upon each other and have to commit to ourselves to resist the temptations to be prejudiced and stereotype others. We cannot demand peace unless we are peaceful ourselves.

This particular date was adopted by the sixtieth session of the United Nations on November 21, 2005, “Resolves that the United Nations will designate 27 January as an annual International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.”  Our events are scheduled on Sundays to accommodate the Jewish community’s presence.

Our safety hinges on the safety of others around us, and it behooves us to work for the safety and security of others on this little planet. We have to be continuously aware of the Holocaust and Genocides and prepare us to avert such tragedies.

We are working on initiating a course on tolerance education, so one day; we all can learn to have a heart that opens to the pain of every human, yes, we can do that.

Bringing people to understand the suffering of people has been my drive, I must say that through this program, many non-Jewish people have come to know about the Holocaust for the first time. You can see pictures people from Atheist to Zoroastrians and everyone in between has been a part of this event. Moreover, everyone has shared a prayer in the past commemorations. We have to create the awareness to get people to become activists and speak up and Never say again.

What is Islam?

Islam is a beautiful system, like all other faiths devised to restore sanity and common sense in a given society through simple basics like building trust, being truthful, be a security to fellow beings, stand up for justice, practice non-judgementalism,  jettison arrogance and adopt humility, and kindness.

These are the seven principles of building cohesive societies
where no human has to live in apprehension or fear of the other,  indeed that is the foundation of Islam and a few Muslim have forgotten it. We have to restore it now for building a cohesive world, where people live their lives and let others live theirs.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) laid that foundation, and those seven principles made him an Amin, an individual who lives his life per those principles.  Unfortunately, a
few have made Islam to be a political system, which it is not. Indeed, sadly all religions have become political systems of you or me, rather than spiritual system of we are in this together.

Preparing a talk on the subject.

Thank you Martin Luther King Jr - 7 things about MLK

Gratitude to Martin Luther King, Jr | TheGhouseDiary.com

Firstly, we the people owe a great deal to Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.  A majority of us Americans were living with a sense of guilt, a sense of being rotten the way we treated our fellow men and women.    His struggle has liberated us from such pain,  and has brought freedom to the oppressed Black Men and women, we still have ways to go, but go we will.

MLK- changed the morality of America for better

Secondly, we the people appreciate the white majority to have stood up for what was right – and join MLK on the steps of Lincoln Memorial to let the administration know what was morally right needs to become the law of the land.

Thirdly, we appreciate the African American community for enduring the humility and non-violently appealing to the morality of the nation and bring about the change that was needed.

Fourthly, we the immigrant Americans, particularly the non-whites would not have made it to America, had it not been for the Civil rights acts that MLK caused to happen. All of us non-white Americans owe our success to MLK and we need to pray for his soul today.

Fifthly, as Indian Americans, we appreciate MLK, who saw the value in Mahatma Gandhi’s’ non-violent methods to turn the oppressors around to see the futility in their approach. In MLK's own voice - https://www.facebook.com/cspanhistory/videos/880821915364690/

Sixthly, as Muslim Americans, we are deeply committed to building a cohesive America, where no American has to feel alienated, apprehensive or fearful of the fellow Americans. We are committed to the safety and security of America.

Seventhly, I invite my fellow Americans to take time to reflect on the bottom line work of all the great spiritual masters and civic leaders in creating such societies, and share your favorite quote of MLK.

Thanks for taking the time to read my heartfelt notes.

Our mission at America Together Foundation is to build a cohesive America, where we are all a part of the great web called America, and whatever we do to us or ourselves, will affect us all.

God bless Martin Luther King Jr., and God bless America

Who am I ?

In progressive Zionism, someone wrote that my friendship limit is up - I responded, no not yet, it should be 7.3 Billion; the entire humanity. He meant Facebook - but I quoted him my Google profile.

The ideal spiritual achievement is when we become one with nature (God), meaning we believe and act as part of the web, and not outside the web. The others parts and us make the whole. It will be a cohesive, interconnected, interdependent world for all of us. What kills this harmony? Arrogance prompted by selfishness and insecurities. How do we work towards it? We accomplish that by respecting the otherness of others and accepting the God given uniqueness of each one of us.
Think about it, no matter how much we argue and disagree, we are still inhabitants of one earth, to a Martian; we are all one and the same.

I don't consider anyone to be my enemy, although I do get death threats, I see the problems in communication, and if we see each other’s point of view, half the battle is won.

I do not run away from any one. I am committed to do my share of building cohesive societies and I intend to connect with everyone as humanly possible as I can.

Tomorrow, if I sit with Bush and have a conversation, it does not mean I am with him. If I sit with Netanyahu, it sure does not mean I am on his side and if I am meeting Modi it does not mean I agree with all of what he says or does. When I am with SeanHannity, we don’t agree but still carry a conversation. A year ago, he said something profound – You are the only Muslim I can talk with. Yes, everyone can talk with me.

A few people have a problem when I am with people they don’t agree with, and I am comfortable with the entire spectrum from left to moderate to extreme right. The problems we have in the world are the result of not talking with and listening to each other.

Pluralism does not mean yielding and making up, it means advocating force (in case of ISIS) to stop the wrong doers from killing other people. Pluralism does not mean I have to agree with you, it means that I see you as a fellow human with your own ambitions, aspirations, apprehension and have to figure out how both of us can live.

Please don’t judge me for who I am with, as I have no barriers between me and the 7. 3 billion people on this earth. I will disagree with you but will not hate you, condemn you or belittle you, it also does not mean I will take the crap from you.

Angela Merkel for Inclusive societies

Hail to Chancellor Merkel, a great patriot and a leader!
Angela Merkel has understood the concept of Patriotism very well, more than any other name sake conservative in the world.  A Patriot sees to it that the nation comes together for the good of every one; a patriot will not let the nation splinter. A great patriot builds a nation and forges all its factions to act cohesively.

Angela Merkel has chosen the right path. In a divisive world where the leaders are sacrificing the long term good for short term political gains, and putting the nation on a destructive path of exclusion of a those who differ, Merkel has done the right thing; choosing inclusion.
Reuters reports that German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Monday Islam "belongs to Germany", in a clear repudiation of anti-immigration protesters gathering in Dresden and other cities. Merkel said her government was doing everything it could to ensure migrants were being successfully integrated into German society regardless of their religion.

I salute her and I am proud of her for saying, “Islam 'belongs to Germany”

It is tempting to fall prey to the vociferous bunch who claps endlessly when a short-sighted leader talks about pushing “them’” to the corner, forcing “them” in to obedience”.  They assume that the wisdom is with them and an eternal battle of rights follow, she showed the leadership and did not fall for the fake conservatives and showed them what a genuine conservative patriot is all about; a nation builder.
Yes, there is none like her and let me tell you why. It takes just one to take the bold step to change the history and Chancellor Merkel has just done it.
Let me give you recent parallels that shaped major events.
President Obama, made a bold statement about accepting same sex marriage – the nation followed him, state after state accepted it– the ones who were opposed flipped, we still got ways to go, but it was his singular stance that changed the nation.

Pope Frances took bold steps of inclusion of Gays and Lesbians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Atheists. In one single stroke he fell many barriers between the people.
What Merkel has done will have pave the way for positive acceptance of Muslims in Germany. Every human wants to be included, and when that Jesus’s embrace wraps every one, the nations will become stronger and will function effectively.

Here is a lesson for Netanyahu, Modi, Sharif, and other leaders who fall prey to the claps and sacrifice the long term goodness of the nation for the short term pleasures of praises. May God guide everyone to see the goodness in inclusion, aka Pluralism! Pluralism is simply an attitude of learning to respect the otherness of others and accepting the God given uniqueness of each one of God’s creation.  When we do that conflicts fade and solutions emerge.
God bless her for her boldness.

Our Happiness is our responsiblity

OUR HAPPINESS IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY
URL - http://theghousediary.blogspot.com/2014/01/our-happiness-is-our-responsiblity.html

MY mother used to describe individual responsibility in vivid terms. Whether it is a nightmare or a pleasant dream, you alone will sweat or smile. Simplistically, if you do wrong, it’s your heinie that will be hauled off to the jail, and you have to live with the torment and pain…others can bail you out, but cannot live with the feelings, but sympathize. You have to live your life yourselves.

Then she would describe the end days, whether it is imaginary or real, but the feeling is real. On the last day, the Armageddon or Qaymat, everything around you is helter skelter, your focus will be to save your own tail and that is very human. No one will be there for you, as each one is busy saving his or her own.

Do you recall the announcement on the airplanes? In case oxygen level drops, the oxygen mask will drop, and they ask you to secure yourselves first, and THEN take care of your child and others.

I have learned that, ultimately no one but you is responsible for your happiness, a state of mind where we are most comfortable, secure and without fear. I have learned that we really do have the choice to make what we make of life. Happiness is not dependent on the things you have or the friends or family members you have, but rather your attitude towards your situation.

You can blame others and other things, but that will not change how you feel inside, you will have to live with yourselves. Take charge of your life, and be yourselves.

From this moment forward, make a commitment, however stupid it sounds, that you will be happy regardless of what surrounds you, and you are not a puppy to dance to the tunes of others, unless you choose to dance. Let life and all the things about life be your choice, that does not mean you oppose everything, it simply means what the heck, I will do this. Whatever your do in life, do it wholeheartedly.

Wish you happiness today, tomorrow and forever, the decision is yours.

Blame religion?

BLAMING RELIGION IS STUPIDITY

We should tell the criminals, those who murder, rape, steal, kill, burn, bomb and go to war - you SOB, you did the harm, you killed, you wronged and you pay for it.

You blame an individual to punish, hang, beat, bury or pay to restore trust through justice in the society. Individuals commit crimes, not religions. Religion does not teach one to be criminal, none whatsoever! We should not buy poor excuses of abusers!

I am not buying your ridiculous stupidity to blame the religion. I am not going to let you get away and blame the religion that I cannot do anything with, it is intangible, I cannot kill it, hang it, fire it or bury it. What's the point in blaming if does nothing?

We build better societies by placing the blame where it belongs; the individuals and not his parents, spouse, siblings, kids, spouse, rabbi, imam, pastor, pundit, gyani, shamans and the mayor of the town and even religion. If we take that stance, we increase the chances of building cohesive societies where no human has to live in apprehension or fear of the other. Where there is justice, trust, harmony and peace are the products.

Dr. Amartya Sen Won’t apologize for Modi remarks

URL- http://theghousediary.blogspot.com/2013/07/dr-amartya-sen-wont-apologize-for-modi.html

It was exciting to read a part of the interview of Dr. Sen about 10:30 PM tonight, Friday the 26th of July 2013. The rest of the interview will be published by Times of India on Sunday.

Dr. Amartya Sen and Mike Ghouse at SMU

Most people appreciate when some one speaks out against the atrocities of the majorities, powerful dictators, monarchs and bullies. The politically motivated Hindu, Muslim and Christian men and women in particular appreciate it,  if it favors them.

My Hindus friends have rejoiced every time I have routinely stood up for them (incomplete list at: http://standingupforothers.blogspot.com/2012/04/standing-with-hindus.html ), but won't appreciate if a Hindu Dr. Amartya Sen does the same.

Let me assure you this,  the good people outnumber all others 95:5, eventually  some one or the other from the majority, be it in India, America, Bolivia or South Africa, and even from Hindus, Jews, Muslims, Christians and Buddhist speaks up for the rights of the deprived, disadvantaged, women, minorities and the weak. God of all creation makes sure his creation has boundaries and has enough peace makers to prevent the world from total annihilation. Bhagvad Gita is clear, "Whenever there is adharma, God will bring about some one to restore Dharma" and Quran beefs it up, "To every tribe, every community and every nation God sends his peace makers to keep peace."

Indeed the work of all religious masters and great statesmen was to build cohesive societies, where no one has to live in apprehension or fear of the other. India is going through big controversy now about the kind of leadership it wants. Nobel Laureate Dr. Amratya Sen is under attack. Mr. Narendra Modi is the contentious Chief Minister ( Like Governor) of Gujarat in India.

Dr. Sen has spoken like a true statesman, an India that belongs to all Indians, I found the expressions of a similar language in my writings. Indeed whether it was Zarthustra, Moses, Krishna, Buddha and the others - the message was same - how to live without fear of the other.

The more people speak up, the better the world would be. So, please do your part.
This morning I defended Dr. Sen’s action with a few friends (appended below) and now, when I read the partial interview, it caused me to go searching on my blog of the similar thoughts I have struggled with.

I have consistently advocated that the peace is the responsibility of the majority; indeed, the civility of a nation is determined by how it treats its women, children, disadvantage, the weak and the minorities. It is in the interest of the nation, particularly the responsible men and women from the political, civic or religious majorities to speak up. It is in everyone's interest for every one to walk well together and not limp. Two of the statements, I wrote resonate with Dr. Amartya Sen’s words

On March 15, 2013, a press release was sent and was published in Bangladeshi News papers and at www.WorldMuslimCongress.com , this was also a part of my speech at Bangladesh Human rights organization in Dallas.

“The success of a nation depends when her citizens feel secure; in this case, it is   the duty of the state to ensure the safety of Hindus, Buddhist, Shia, Ahmadiyya, Christian and other minorities.

It is also the obligation of the Bangladeshi majority to continue to speak up against the brutal treatment of fellow Bangladeshis who are Hindu. Indeed, the safety of a community is the responsibility of the majority.”
(URL - http://worldmuslimcongress.blogspot.com/2013/03/muslims-condemn-brutal-attacks-on.html )

The Daily Times of Pakistan published my piece on Imran Khan, and I wrote, “Humanity in general and Muslims in particular are guided to stand up for justice. Only the civility of majority can change things. Minorities do not have a voice in Pakistan and they live on with apprehensions. The Hindu parents worry when their daughter will be abducted and forced to convert or when the Ahmadiyya girl student will be kicked out of school or their graves are desecrated, Shias ordered out of the bus and shot point blank and Christians will be framed with blasphemy charges. Societies are judged by how they treat their minorities, women and children. Good Pakistanis are letting bad things happen in their names.”

(URL - http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2013%5C05%5C08%5Cstory_8-5-2013_pg3_5 )

A note came from a friend, “What irked me was his (Dr. Sen) comment on Modi not doing enough for the minorities.” And, “Sen does not address those issue but more interested in bad mouthing Modi on minority issues because it is a very popular and sophisticated issue.”

My response was, “I must add that collectively different Indians have to speak on different topics - including far and against to bring different angles to the fore - Dr. Sen has picked one that he probably feels has not been given enough attention. Each one of us has to focus on many strands of democracy.”

Glad to see a positive response about democracy from my friend later.

If there were to be an apology, the apology is owed to the families of people who were burnt alive in the train, families of the people who were raped, families of children who were burnt alive on every street corner, family of the MP who was tortured to death,  and all the families who were uprooted for improper management of the law and order in the state. And that apology must come from the Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

MUMBAI: Even as the firestorm over Amartya Sen's remarks about Narendra Modi refuses to die down, the Nobel-winning economist said he had nothing to apologize for saying that he did not wish to see the Gujarat chief minister become India's next Prime Minister.

In an exclusive interview to TOI (read the full interview on Sunday), Sen pointed to his fundamental right to raise such issues and also clarified that it was his duty as a member of the majority community to speak up about the fears of minorities.

"I am not apologizing for the statement on Modi," he said, while explaining that "as an Indian citizen I am very worried that we're not doing enough on many things in public discourse, that we're not raising the right viewpoints on several issues."

'Gujarat model not good'

Defending his remarks on Gujarat CM, Nobel-winning economist Amartya Sen told TOI, "I've tried to point to this when it kept being brought up about why I made that statement about Modi. I felt that as a member of the majority community in India it is my duty, not merely my right, to speak up about the concerns of the minority. We often forget that as members of the majority," Sen said.

"Despite the fact that there are many things that Modi has done as CM which are interesting and important — and I've talked about them even though when held up as a model I don't think it makes for a very good one — there's still that scare, that sense of fear," he said.

Quoting 19th-century English philosopher John Stuart Mill, who wrote that the security of minority rights really depends on the majority, Sen also pointed to how debates in the US (where he spends some time teaching at Harvard University) often go on at great length about the need to better secure minority rights.

"I live there as part of a minority and you see how concerned they are about these issues. Here, I have to exercise my duty as part of the majority and bring up my concerns. This is essential to the practice of democracy, which, like liberty, must be vigorously defended. Eternal vigilance is the price you pay for that liberty," he said.

Gaza Israel conflict - November 2012

Site: www.IsraelPalestineDialogue.com

Peace hinges on justice to the Palestinians and security to the Israelis. A durable peace comes when neither is compromised.
Our foreign policy and the policy of Arab nations is the real villain in the conflict. Instead of egging each party to the conflict and causing them to dig in their bloody heels, we need to tell them to stop the non-sense and get to the table.

We, the Americans, and them the Arabs must withdraw all the support to both nations, until they sit down and show the progress. No support without results. We have caused the conflict to prolong, and we bear the responsibility to find solutions.

The bullshit theory of supporting the allies has ruined both people, we are screwing Israelis, instead of finding sustainable security for them,  we are causing them to prolong the conflict, the Arab nations are doing the same.  We can be heroes, by tying our support to progress. If Israel or Palestine does not show their ability to dialogue, we have a right to demand them to sit down and find solutions, for their own good.

I hope Obama understands this, and takes the necessary action. Everyone wants peace but we don’t do the things that take us there.

It is time to drop all the previous failed policies and go with a bold new idea. “If you two don’t show us the progress within 30 days, we are not going to support you." We need to get the Arabs and on our side and they will do it, if the outcome is good for Palestine and Israel with no gain for us.We need to be just and honest. The Jewish people want sincerity as much as the Palestinians, they don't need duplicity.

Please do not judge any one without the full picture, and it is atwww.IsraelPalestineDialouge.com. If you can hold out blaming either side, then you are a true peace maker and you will find sustainable solutions. We had enough for 64 years and it is time to bring goodness to both.

I hope to articulate the full idea in the article to be published in Huffington post next week.

ON THE AIR TODA ABOUT MIDDLE EAST

It was a 30 minutes talk on  social cohesiveness, addressing burning of Sikh Temple in Vancouver, Obama's 2nd term, foreign policy - Much of the foreign policy discussion followed by article in Huffington post Huffington Post - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-ghouse/chaotic-romney-and-stable-obama_b_1998900.html

Hello Mike; salaam;

I was wondering if you would be available this coming Friday 11/9/2012 at 9 am Pacific (11 am Texas) to talk with me on my radio show Voices of the Middle East about President Obama's second term in the office especially as it relates to the Middle East and Muslim Americans in the states, what prospects do you see now that he is not limited to election commitments and concerns. You have been on my show once before, it is online at www.voicesofthemiddleeast.com in case you want to check the flavor of it. I am thinking of talking live perhaps 20 to 30 minutes.
