Interfaith symposium on Economic Justice

Symposium organized by Ahmadiyya Muslims, Allen, Texas
Sunday, May 20, 2012.

Speakers: Suhail Kauser, Rabbi Yogi Robkin, Rev. Judi Arkow, Rev. Bill Matthews, Minister Pravrajika Brahmaprana, Pluralist Mike Ghouse, Editor Rick Mann and Imam Mohammad Zafrullah Hanjra.

Each one of the speakers shared their perspective on the issue, it was humorous and a lively discussion.

I lost my card where I scribbled my points, but off memory, I am writing the following notes, they are not exactly the same.

Everything about nature is balance; matter has a built-in balance mechanism, whereas humans have to build it.

The idea of economic justice began, when man figured out a way to live with his enemies or perceived enemies, and live with the available food without worrying about the food being stolen or safety of his family.
What did the subsequent religious leaders do? They reconstituted precisely what the hunters and gatherers had learned. They created societies where no one had to live in discomfort, apprehension or fear of the other. If one violated the norms, there was punishment accorded to the one.

Part of the economic justice is based on – taking care of the ones in the pit. It is not giving the fish, but helping them catch the fish. It makes economic sense to uplift the downtrodden on to a level playing field – imagine in terms of adding a whole slew of customers, service people and producers to your economic system. It multiplies and grows.

Responsible capitalism is the way to go. It is about the individual incentive to achieve his or her peak performance. Indeed, it begins with God. He, she or it offers the first incentive, the more good you do to the fellow being, the more harmony you add to his creation – and earn the brownie points.

Similarly, when an individual’s puts in time, effort, ideas and energy to work, he should be compensated to the full and rewarded… he can uplift a whole lot of people with him or her, rather than punishing him for creating wealth for him, which creates wealth for others.

American capitalistic system is great and can become the best, if corporations keep economic justice in mind. People can be taken advantage of to a point, beyond that it will be destructive. They rebel and destroy everything giving birth to either communism or socialism in varying degrees.

When Moses came down from Sinai with the tablets, his unstated goal was to restore trust in the society through orderly conduct. Krishna emerged to reinstate dharma (righteousness). Jesus wanted to redeem the lost souls. And Muhammad revived the message of Abraham, of one common creator and accountability for our Karma.

Buddha taught that one can achieve freedom through self-regulating. Guru Nanak saw the commonalities between Hindus and Muslims on the basis of Seva (service). And Bahaullah taught the oneness of humanity. Of course, the Native Americans had set a fine example of sharing knowledge among various tribes for the common good.

Economic Justice is the key for the success of a nation, where everyone benefits from the prosperity, if there is an imbalance, it will start falling apart for wealth accumulators, consumers and producers alike.

Economic justice can be compared to a smooth running reliable car, if all the parts are greased, well oiled and well kept you can count on it go anywhere. One part can hamper the functioning of the entire car, a loss of air in one tire can hold back. Who is responsible? The tire or the rider of the car?

Religions have created systems for it, the tithe, Zakat and charitable giving is to ensure that no one is in the ditch and pulled back on level playing field. Medicare, health care are part of that system, we need to look at as an investment for higher overall returns.

I need to write a full blown article to teach economic justice and its benefits to my fellow Republicans. Doing good does well to all. Rich people will get richer, if they have a healthy work force. I hope to get this to them before they turn things upside down.

Rotary Club Denton

Thursday, April 5, 2012 - Denton.

It was a pleasure to deliver a powerful key note message at the Rotary club of Denton today at El Chapparell Restaurant in Downtown, Denton.

It was a joy to see Rotarian's actively involved in the community. Nearly 60 of them made it to the meeting.

The message was about the need for building a cohesive America, where no American has to live in discomfort, anxiety or fear of the other.

If we can learn to respect the otherness of the other, and accept the God given uniqueness of each one of the 312 million of us, then conflicts fade an solutions emerge.

Ever since we got our independence, the social, religious and economic issues have pit one American against the other, however after enduring the turmoil, we have always come back strong as one nation.

If we can focus on prosperity and safety of America, all other issues become secondary and resolvable.

On the way out, I was thinking about the social structures we have in place, a way for diverse people to come together for doing common good. It is a natural progression in American Pluralism, there was a time when the Catholic, Baptist, Presbyterians... and others had their own silos, their own groupings with least interaction with the others.

When Henry Ford made automobiles affordable, it gave us all increased mobility and with that, we moved and interacted with people of different religions. Necessity is the mother of invention as they say, sure enough we figured out the best way to live and come together for common good. The Rotary club along with other social organizations has facilitated pluralism in America; we still have ways to go.

I have a dream, a dream to see a cohesive America where we focus on safety and prosperity of every American. Indeed, prosperity is pluralistic in nature; you cannot have it, unless others around you have it. You cannot be safe unless others around you are safe.  As an Indian- Muslim-Indian American I am committed to contribute towards the safety and prosperity of America.

The following information is from their website:  http://www.dentonrotary.com/

I thank the officers, organizers and members of the Rotary club, a great group of people!

What Is Rotary?

The original Rotary Club was organized in Chicago, Illinois, by Paul P. Harris, a lawyer. It first met February 23, 1905. The name "Rotary" was chosen because the club met in rotation at each member’s place of business. The Rotary idea of friendship, fellowship and service to others spread to six continents and over one million members.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. In more than 160 countries worldwide approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 30,000 Rotary Clubs.

Happy Lent, the essence of Lent from a Muslim perspective

I am pleased to share my thoughts about Lent.

As a token of solidarity, today, I join my Christian friends and give up drinking soda for the next 40 days to honor their practice.

Years ago, my daughter observed Lent, and I am glad she did, she got out of the addiction of Dr. Pepper, what a good thing it was!  People give up smoking and this period of 40 days is renewal in every sense, whether you are Christian or not, you can join in the process of reflection and purifying and being in tune with fellow beings.

Lent reminds me of 3o days of Muslim Ramadan; 7 days for Jain Paryushan of Jains; 8 days of Jewish Passover; and 9 days of Hindu Navaratri. The essence of all these events is renewal of the soul and reflection on life.  I am happy that these actions are designed to make better humans out of us.

Every faith is composed of a set of unique rituals to bring discipline and peace to human life. Fasting is one of the key elements of observing Lent.

The spirit and intent of Lent lies in a human transformation in a forty days long inner spiritual journey of finding oneself in tune with spirituality.

God has no need for the hunger or thirst of someone who hurts others, violates their dignity or usurps their rights, said Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The fasting of the stomach must be matched by the fasting of the limbs. The eyes, ears, tongue, hands and feet all have their respective fasts to undergo. The tongue's temptations, for example - lies, backbiting, slander, vulgarity and senseless argumentation - must be challenged and curbed to maintain the integrity of the fast.

Consciousness of behavior and vigilance over action are the most profound dimensions of lent: the fasting of the heart focuses on the attachment to the divine. That is when Lent really becomes a source of peace and solace, and goes beyond the rituals to bring forth kindness, charity and caring.

True fasting is self-purification; and from this, a rich inner life that bring about values such as justice, generosity, patience, kindness, forgiveness, mercy and empathy - values that are indispensable for the success of the community.

Knowing about hunger is different from knowing hunger. Empathy is not an intellectual equation; it is a human experience. Our hardness of heart often springs from our distance from the human condition of others. The poor, sick, disenfranchised, oppressed - we rarely walk a mile in their shoes, not even a few steps. "Rest assured," cautioned one teacher, "if you do not taste what it feels like to be hungry, you will not care for those who are."

For fasting to be truly universal, its benefits must extend beyond the fraternal ties of Christians and must extend to forging a common humanity with others. Fasting is meant to impart a sense of what it means to be truly human, and its universality is reflected by its observance in Baha’i, Buddhist, Muslims, Hindu, and Jain, Jewish, Sikh, Zoroastrian and other faiths.

Lent will come and go with such stealth that we cannot but be reminded of our mortality. What is it that we value and why? Habits, customs, even obsessive behavior like smoking can be curtailed with relative ease in the face of a higher calling.

I am pleased to borrow the following specifics about Lent from Wikipedia.

The traditional purpose of Lent is the penitential preparation of the believer-through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial. Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events of the Passion of Christ on Good Friday, which then culminates in the celebration on Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

During Lent, many of the faithful commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxury as a form of penitence. The Stations of the Cross, a devotional commemoration of Christ's carrying the Cross and of His execution, are often observed. Many Roman Catholic and some Protestant churches bare their altars of candles, flowers, and other devotional offerings, while Crucifixes, religious statues, and other elaborate religious paraphernalia are often veiled in violet fabrics in observance of this event. In certain pious Catholic countries, grand processions and cultural customs are observed, and the faithful attempt to visit seven churches during Holy Week in honor of Jesus Christ heading to Mount Calvary.

According to the Synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent forty days fasting in the desert before the beginning of His public ministry, where He endured temptation by Satan.[2][3] Thus, Lent is described as being forty days long, though different denominations calculate the forty days differently. In many of the Christian churches, Lent is regarded as being forty days long, but the Sundays between Shrove Tuesday and Easter Sunday are not typically regarded as being part of Lent; thus, the date of Shrove Tuesday will typically be slightly more than forty days before Easter Sunday.

This event, along with its pious customs is observed by Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Anglicans, as well as some Baptists and Mennonites and others.

CITIZENSHIP, ISLAM AND AMERICA IN 2012

Law is one thing and practice is the other. As an American and as a Muslim, I have to be critical of both groupings and work towards creating cohesive societies where no citizen has to live in apprehension, discomfort or fear of the other. Here is a summary of 2011 and what we can aspire for 2012. First of all, let’s look at the bigotry prevalent in Muslim majority nations and then focus on America in the second half of the article. How do we make our lives better for us and for fellow Americans.

HAPPY NEW YEAR – HOW TO MAKE YOUR 2012 MEANINGFUL

Whether you are with family, friends or alone, you can make your new year meaningful and reflective. For many years, I have set aside "TWO HOURS" yes, just two hours on new years eve or earlier and have focused on different aspects of my life and found a lot of peace and tranquility in knowing who I am and what I want out of life. In those two hours, I allow nothing else to crawl on my mind or deviate from the job I sat down for. Continued at- http://theghousediary.blogspot.com/2011/12/purposeful-2012.html

CYCLISTS RALLY FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN DALLAS

We welcome the Japanese Americans bike riders at Dallas city Hall on January 2, 2012 to highlight an issue that we should all think about. As global citizens we need to commit ourselves to restoring social order in our societies where no one has to live with the fear of persecution. This is what all of the spiritual masters wanted to do, and precisely what Jesus wanted to do; to create the Kingdom of Heaven.” http://wisdomofreligion.blogspot.com/2011/12/cyclists-rally-for-religious-freedom-at.html

FOUNDATION FOR GOOD MARRIAGE

Love, equity, and kindness are the hallmarks of an ideal marriage. Deep down each one in the relationship wants the experience to be a blessing. As long as both are just and fair to each other, it will remain blissful. The moment one takes advantage of the other, and does not consider the other as equal the marriage will start slip sliding. It is time to fix it immediately… nothing will work out by itself.. you have to work for it. The longer you wait, the worse it gets, you have to act now.  Both are equally responsible to restore the marriage or let it go bad.  Each should resist the temptation to get even, or telling the other to go to hell. Remember, it is really not the money that brings peace of mind, it is humility. You must consciously say the words and do the things that restores the bliss you once had and resist the temptation to aggravate each other. Happiness is a choice. May you commit yourselves to strengthening your relationship? Amen.
