Further to Ambassador Akbar Ahmed’s book Suspended somewhere between

Further to Ambassador Akbar Ahmed’s book
Suspended somwhere between.

The medium of poetry is amazing; you can say so much in so few words.  I am appealing to the poet in you to enjoy this book. Whatever page you open, there is wisdom in it. I just opened page 70, and here are a few beautiful words that poets would love, particularly those aspiring to nurture goodwill.

Like my Sunni ancestors…
I am on a journey
with others walking alongside
some taking the help of imams and ayatollahs
others the Law of Moses or love of Jesus…
I see those who find the divine in the Ganges
or on top of Himalayas
The find the divine in the noble doings of Lord Ram
yet others find other paths
I wish them all Godspeed..
For all of them are part of the nations and tribes
that the Quran tells me I must love
So that I can love my God.

This poem and many such poems in the book will appeal to just about every one, it is a human proclivity to seek harmony, when you sense it, and it's like heaven. The theme I have noticed consistently is that of co-existence, aka Pluralism; an attitude of building cohesive societies.
Pluralism is learning to respect and appreciate the God given uniqueness of each one of the Seven billion of us, when we do that, conflicts fade and solutions emerge. When Jesus says, "follow me", Krishna says to "surrender to me" and Allah says "submit to my will" the message is same; become like me, me who is beyond boundaries, to me all belongs and I make no distinction between you and the other soul. The best among you is one who cares for my creation. A review of the book is also at:  http://theghousediary.blogspot.com/2011/06/dr-akbar-ahmeds-poetry-suspended.html
Dr. Ahmed yearns for unity, harmony and co-existence in this book for the world in general but grounded in the Subcontinent. Years ago, I wrote, we are proud of our heritage - a multi-faith, multi-cultural, multi-regional and multi-linguistic society, where we have come to accept and respect every which way people have lived their lives. For over 5000 years, India has been a beacon of pluralism - it has embraced Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Baha'i and Zoroastrianism to include in the array of the indigenous religions; Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism and several native traditions.

Dr. Akbar Ahmed's Poetry- Suspended Somehwere Between

DR. AKBAR AHMED’S BOOK SUSPENDED SOMEWHERE BETWEEN
Poems by Dr. Akbar Ahmed

Suspended Somewhere Between, a book by Dr. Akbar Ahmed.

One of the qualities of a great book is its ability to transport you into a world of your imagination, into your own islands of life where you visit and dwell in a period that is sacred to you, undistributed, private, secret and untouched for years, it’s your reverie. A home stacked away in memories where the mere recall of your loved ones gives you a sense of security, peace and safety. As you read through Dr. Ahmed’s poems, you may find an anchor for your own expressions.

The book, “Suspended somewhere between” is a collection of poetry by Dr. Akbar Ahmed who is aptly called “the world’s leading authority on contemporary Islam” by the BBC News. Dr. Ahmed seeks what a majority of us seek; to live in harmony with what surrounds us, life and matter.

The essence of one of the poems “What I seek” is primarily what each one of us seeks.  I found a deep resonance with him in this poem. It lights up the spark of the universal embrace of Jesus, Muhammad’s desire to imbue a sense of equality through humility, Mahatma Gandhi’s jihad against oppression and temptations to revenge and Martin Luther King’s firm belief in human dignity. They were the models of excellence on the earth that he invokes to put us on the pathways of peace. It is indeed a poem for men and women who have an open heart and an open mind towards fellow beings.

I was tense reading the title of another poem, “The Train to Pakistan”. Years ago, I had differed with Dr. Ahmed’s take on Jawaharlal Nehru in his movie “Jinnah” which he had gracefully acknowledged without agreeing. Being a Subcontinentian, I am equally committed to peace and prosperity of the region and have come to admire Dr. Ahmed’s efforts in prose and now in the form of poetry. As the poem moves forward, I paused at the Killing fields of Punjab and visited Sunder Lal in Bangalore who had came in the other train to Delhi and witnessed the slaughter of his family members in the same Punjab but on the other side of the divide. It was painful but the wise man was not hateful.

Dr. Ahmed puts me at ease about  the carnage, instead he expresses his gratitude to his mother who had asked to take the next train, and blames none for what happened to his would have been train where no one survived. It is the statesman in him that seeks solutions rather than blame, just as my father taught me one of the important lessons of life to build cohesive societies.  During the communal riots in Jabalpur in the sixties both Muslims and Hindus were killed in the mayhem, he was clear and named the individuals without emphasizing their religion to be blamed, he said you cannot blame the blameless intangible religion and expect justice, we must blame the individuals who caused it and punish them accordingly for disturbing the peace and thus bring a resolution to the conflict by serving justice.  I see that value jumping out of Dr. Ahmed in that poem and that is the definition of an ideal Muslim; one who seeks to mitigate conflicts and nurtures goodwill.
The poem Khyber Pass” moves you again; especially those who are seeking to create a cohesive America where no one has to be apprehensive of the other. It is the not the pass, it is how one responds that affects the equation. The Nuclear Power in the right hands is beneficent while destructive in the other, same as the story of religion.

Dr. Ahmed has dedicated a beautiful poem for his mother and this stanza expresses the sentiments of most of the humanity.

“When I know that at midnight
she sits up praying to her God
to keep me warm and whole,”

Suspended Somewhere is a reflection of a life that has experienced  it all from the near obliterating journey in the train to a new land of hope, idolizing the founder of that nation Muhammad Ali Jinnah to passionately working to restore the dream of one nation. Pensive at Khyber, a PhD from London University, an Ambassador to United Kingdom and author of one of the most successful books on contemporary Islam in America, Dr. Akbar Ahmed appeals to those who can bring about a positive change. It’s a beautiful journey of hopes and aspirations.

TEXAS FAITH: Anthony Weiner and Internet ethics

By now, we all know more about Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner’s online habits than we probably care to know. But his distribution of a lewd photo and online sex-talk with women other than his wife does raise ethical issues that the Internet if fast forcing upon us. And that is, to what degree is a sin a sin?
Jesus certainly said that to look at a woman with lust was like committing adultery. So, to some extent, that ethic applies to today’s wired world. Applying that standard, what happens online “counts” as much as what happens physically between two people.
But here’s the question for this week from William McKenzie/ Editorial Columnist, Dallas Morning News; "In what ways does the Internet force us to rethink ethical standards?"
Here is the take from Mike Ghouse, one of the 7 seven panelists for all the response go to: http://religionblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2011/06/texas-faith-anthony-weiner-and.html
MIKE GHOUSE, President, Foundation for Pluralism, Dallas

We keep going back to the basics whenever there is a flaunting violation of ethics in the public square. This is like going home where it is safe and comfortable. Ethical standards are indeed dynamic and are moving away from public domain to individual concerns in linear progression. However, they remain the anchor of a culturally stable society.
Before the emergence of earliest formal religions like Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Hinduism and the native traditions, adultery was handled like the bulls or the rams, it was not even considered an ethical issue. Whoever was mightier took the girl as though she was a prized chattel.

We have come a long way in moving the civilization to maturation. The statement, "to look at a woman with lust is like committing adultery" is not as comfortable as it was a hundred years ago. Today we are consciously accommodating, "to look at the other person with lust is like betraying the trust of the spouse or a partner."

Oddly the word "sin" is alarmingly absent in the public discourse on Weiner's issue. Indeed, the word is reduced to a personal betrayal rather than a public violation that demanded flogging once. Even the evangelicals were looking at Gingrich, Spitzer, Hart, Craig, Edwards and Clinton as violators rather than sinners, all the while Clinton made attempts to redefine sin in the Lewinsky hearings. According to a new CNN poll, "56 percent of voters in Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner's district do not think the scandal-plagued congressman should resign."

Welcome to the world of new emerging ethics. Thanks to the Internet for forcing us to factor in a variety of individual opinions to change the public discourse on sin, ethics and morality. Without the Internet, the only opinions that mattered were that of the clergy and the polls reaching out to a few.

But today, citizen journalism, blogging and social networks are dramatically altering the black and white issues into colorful ones that give an ever-widening range. The opinions are not the domain of a few any more, but of everyone who freely expresses his or her opinion on a given topic. On my facebook, I have received over 70 comments on the issue and the conversation about open marriages and accommodating the whims in a relationship has earned a space.

As a futurist, I see the word "sin" to remain on books but gradually lose its old meaning and acquire a new value in the public square. The violations would be individual in nature resulting in betrayal and cheating, rather than sinful activities. A new ethics is in the making.

Governor Perry has to prove, he is sincere

I appeal to Americans to attend the prayers by demanding an inclusion and not allow Gov. Perry to chop God into bits and pieces; yours and mine. America is yours and mine, let's not allow any rascal to monopolize God to serve his interests.

It is not a run of the mill candidate forum and it is not about the typical budget issue. 6.     CANDIDATES INTRODUCTION

As a society, it is our responsibility to keep law and order and faithfully guard the safety of every citizen. Hate is one of the many sources of disrupting the peace in a society and it is our duty to track down the source of such hate and work on mitigating it.  America together, Americans Together is an educational and pragmatic initiative to wean out myths from reality that is hurting the social cohesiveness of America. The myths are vigorously pumped in by a few insecure souls to disrupt delicate balance in the society by pitching one American against the other for their perceived gains.

The purpose of this “America Together” is to remove such myths in an open discussion forum and restore the cohesiveness of our society and work towards building a safe and secure America.

7.     ONE MINUTE RESPONSE

Since our independence in 1776, we have been tested time and again by various political, economic and religious forces to divide us, however, at the end we have come out strong as one nation. The Civil War, the Great Depression, the World War, Pearl Harbor, Women’s rights, Abortion, the Vietnam War, Civil Rights, Budget Deficits, Unemployment, 9/11, the Iraq and Afghanistan War have all been difficult, but we will make it through and sanity will prevail.

To the naysayers, we say, if we don’t do a thing about it, nothing good can be expected to happen.

Please pass the microphones… after response.

a.     Civil Unions,
b.     Racial profiling,
c.      Islamophobia,
d.     Anti-Semitism
e.      Immigration reforms in Farmers Branch
f.       Anti-Circumcision issues in San Francisco http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-ghouse/circumcision-satire_b_872270.html

8.     What plans do they have to keep the social cohesion in Carrollton? We have come a long way to embrace and accept the otherness of other and we have a whole lot more to go; in the coming months we will be holding meetings to understand the complexity of issues such as Gay & Lesbian acceptance, Anti-Semitism, Stereotyping, Racial profiling and hope to find answers that will lead to accepting the otherness of other to co-exists in harmony despite our differences.

9.     Q & A

Please ask the question without commentary, we need to get a few questions answered and I request you to just ask the question… take a minute. Thank you.

BONNIE KAPLAN, PLACE 2
http://www.bonniekaplan.org/

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Bonnie Kaplan and I am running for Carrollton City Council, Place 2. Thank you for coming here this evening.

I know about budgets and economic development from having served before on the Carrollton City Council. This time, if I am fortunate enough to be elected, my emphasis will be on community.

Let me tell you two stories to illustrate. Back in the year 2000, I was serving on city council and was running for mayor. In the middle of the campaign, on Easter Sunday which was also Passover, my very large double white front doors were spray painted with a huge black swastika. My husband is a Jew, and in a Jewish household there is not a symbol that is more disgusting. We were shocked and horrified, as were many in our community. This cruel event hurt us for a very long time, for it caused us to wonder who would do something so terrible to us. Through this event, I learned what it felt like to be an outsider, ostrasized for no reason except religion and heritage.

I always had a heart and a soul for community and diversity. This event only strengthened it.

In 2009, the A.W. Perry Museum Society decided to make a quilt to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the rebuilt A.W. Perry home. I was named project leader for a fundraising event. We decided to sell squares and strips that people would purchase and sign. The signed squares and strips would be incorporated into the design of the quilt. I realized that Carrollton today looked very different than the Carrollton of 1909. One of the most obvious differences was in the demographics. Today Carrollton is a very diverse city, ethnically, religiously and socially.

I decided to seek out those who would represent the many kinds of diversity. Therefore, we reached out to everyone. No one was excluded. People who participated in the project ranged from in ages from eight to ninety-one. Many different races were included in the quilt. Some people signed because of their occupations, such as firefighters and boy scouts, others signed because of their countries of origin, such as Lebanon, Pakistan, India, Mexico, China, Vietnam and Egypt. There were patches for various churches, including Christians, Baptists, Hindu, Orthodox Armenians, Jewish and Muslims. Descendants of the original settlers of Carrollton also signed the quilt.

The signed squares and strips were sent to a quilter with no instructions on how to place them. She did not know the participants and so randomly placed the patches throughout the design. The finished quilt became of tapestry of Carrollton’s diversity and community. It represents an ideal to which we can all aspire, with all the differences stitched into one beautiful whole!

The four issues identified in your request are a variety of diverse topics that have been argued at the national level for many years and all still remain virtually unresolved in the minds of most Americans.

In my campaign literature and in several public forums, I have documented one of my 5 top goals as "fair and equitable representation for all Carrollton residents".  Race, color, religion, sexual orientation or financial status will not be criteria used by me to determine how I will treat my constituents.

If elected, my plan is to partner with council members and together explore establishing the Diversity Round Table that existed a few years ago.  The objective would be to seek individuals that represent the vast diverse population that resides in our great city.

In my many years of life experience and all that has been brought in my  direction I have learned that fear of the unknown is perhaps what keeps us from truly understanding  our differences. We need to pursue that unknown to know who we are.

With that in mind I would recommend a three step approach.

Step 1 Education: Once the Round Table group is established an education phase would begin.  The objective is to get to know all cultures represented on an overview perhaps high level basis.

Step 2 Explore: The next phase is to explore the commonalities and perhaps the differences between each culture and analyze what and why those differences exist.

Step 3 Celebrate: Once better prepared and educated on our commonalities and our differences we should then formulate a plan to share, display and celebrate our cultures.

These are three simple steps that should be used to build on.  We should explore what other municipalities have in place and learn from their successes.

Carrollton is a great place to work, live and raise a family that is fast growing in minority representation.  That should not be looked at as a negative but should be celebrated.

CATHY HENESY, PLACE 4

Social Cohesion by Cathy Henesey
Word Count: 249, as requested

Wikipedia defines social cohesion as a term that   “describe the bonds or ‘glue’ that bring people together in society, particularly in the context of cultural diversity.”

I believe that Carrollton exudes social equality as seen by all representations of individuals that live in our neighborhoods and our culturally diverse business owners.
I think our legal citizens enjoy fair and equal conditions when it comes to housing, jobs, education, and overall social conditions. Our opportunities as a leader are to encourage our community to participate in our community beyond their comfort zone. Our city’s boards/commissions lack participants to fill seats, our HOAs are lacking citizens who want to step up as leaders and our civil and charity organizations lack board members to sustain their organizations. The opportunity is there for all citizens to make a difference.

As an elected official, it would be my responsibility to reach out to all residents of Carrollton and make them aware of the vast opportunities to get involved and how vitally important it is to keep our city thriving.

Volunteering plays a key role in economic regeneration and we need our community to stay active; it is empathy that can lead to segregation and separation. I find great inspiration from Seth Godin’s book, The Tribe, who speaks differently about getting people involved and feeling a part of something bigger.

I live this methodology and I have an innate ability to lead and get others involved in a bigger vision than they can think individually.

Circumcision; Jews and Muslim together

Calling it Male Genital Mutilation is going too far, it shows utter disregard for enduring religious traditions of Jews, Muslims and others comprising nearly a fourth of humanity. Mind you, it is not a practice of a vanishing cult that is here today and gone tomorrow. Continued: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-ghouse/circumcision-satire_b_872270.html

TEXAS FAITH: Is Rick Perry's "Day of Prayer and Fasting" about religion or politics?

Dallas Morning News poses a question a week on issues of the day. Mike Ghouse has been offering his pluralistic take on issues along with a dozen other Texas Faith Panelists. Here is my take and everyone's take is at: http://religionblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2011/06/is-rick-perrys-day-of-prayer-a.html
The question this week is this: If invited, would you go? Why or why not?
# # #
MIKE GHOUSE, FOUNDATION FOR PLURALISM, DALLAS
If Governor Perry invites, I will join the prayers and perhaps offer to open the event with inclusive greetings and prayers where every American feels welcome. Whether you are a Native American, follow an earth based tradition, believe in one God, multiple representations of God or No God, you must feel the embracive inclusion.

Why would I want to go? Most aspects of life like politics, religion, culture and society remain monopolized by a few, not necessarily because they vehemently guard its ownership, but because others have dug in their heels as well and have not reciprocated to the “half hearted” invitation.  I am committed to work towards a cohesive America, and would not want to miss an opportunity to place every one on a level playing field.

The wisdom is reiterated in every tradition, when an enemy walks toward you in reconciliation, you are to run towards him or her as both will benefit from the ensuing change. Most people follow this advice and some don’t. Indeed, God helps those who help themselves.

If this is a political stunt by Governor Perry, he will fall flat on his face, he has the opportunity to demonstrate his sincerity by giving a dignified space to every belief, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, exclusionists, pluralists, evolutionists and creationists. The Atheists, humanists and others will join if they are honored with space to express their wish for fellow Americas without invoking God. I do hope the prayers are for the wellbeing of every one of the 26 Million Texans and 312 Million Americans.

If he is using this event as a prelude to run for the President, it is another opportunity for him to be a change maker like Presidents Reagan and Clinton who have reshaped the divisive politics into an inclusive one.  They were in tune with the sentiments of the moderate majority of Americans; and likewise, it would be difficult to beat Obama with divisive politics, Americans believe in live and let live and who ever aligns with them has a faint chance.

Monday Humor

http://theghousediary.blogspot.com/2011/06/monday-humor.html

Living a fuller life is experiencing everything possible out there. Happiness is a choice and it should not be dependent on things, it should be based on basic contentment, gratitude that we have a life to experience; contentment is being grateful that you can hear but cannot see, it is contentment when you can see but cannot walk...  it is contentment when you can eat a square meal and have a friend who and you accept each other without demands. I have found happiness is a choice and gratitude is the pillar on which it stands.  Enjoy the following humor

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COMPLETE & FINISHED
No English dictionary has been able to explain the difference
between the two words. In a way that's easy to understand.
Some people say there is no difference between COMPLETE
& FINISHED. I beg to differ because, there is!!!
When you marry the right MAN, you are "COMPLETE"..
And when you marry the wrong one, you are "FINISHED"!
And when the right one catches you with the wrong one, you are ...
"COMPLETELY FINISHED" !!!

WOMEN'S HUMOROUS SEX
My husband came home with a tube of K Y jelly
And said, 'This will make you happy tonight.'
He was right!
When he went out of the bedroom, I squirted it all over the doorknobs.
He couldn't get back in.
-------------------------------------------------
Saturday  morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, and slipped quietly into the garage.  I hooked up the boat up to the  van and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day.
I went back into the house,  quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife's back; now with a different anticipation, and whispered, "The weather out there is terrible."
My loving wife of 5 years replied, "And, can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?"
And that's how the fight started...
-------------------------------------------------
After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security.
The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's License to verify my age.
I looked in my  pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home.  I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later.
The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'.
So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.
She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application.
When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.  She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability too.'
And then the fight started...
