Tipu Sultan's ring to be auctioned off at Christies

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA SHOULD BUY THIS HISTORIC RING
AND TAKE PRIDE IN INDIAN RULER'S SECULAR CREDENTIALS

URL - http://mikeghouseforindia.blogspot.com/2014/05/tipu-sultans-ring-to-be-auctioned-off.html

"RAM" IS INSCRIBED ON THE RING IN HINDI

This is indeed one of the best news I have read about Tippu Sultan, reaffirming his credentials as a secular ruler.

Dr. Range Gowda has done through research and has unearthed the documents found in the Sringeri Mutt in Mangalore - where the Jagadguru of the Mutt has praised Tippu Sultan for saving the temple from the Maratha onslaught and restoring the temple.  Tippu also rebuilt the Ranganatha Swamy temple in Sri Rangapatna.

When I was around 8-10 years old, my Dad corrected the tour guide at the temple for his divisive language when we went on a tour of Mysore. It's amazing, it's almost like hereditary, I do the same, and I have corrected the tour guides in Israel, India, Australia and elsewhere.

He is one of the first three rulers in the world who had recognized American independence and had sent his greetings; the letter is in a French Library per Dr. Gowda.

He is falsely accused of forcing conversions of Christians and Hindus, he was not aware of it, his overzealous fanatic generals did that, just as Amit Shah could muddle things with his thoughtless idiotic words do in the name of Modi and Modi will get the bad rap for it.

This is one of the few brass busts made on biennial century of Tippu's death in 1999; one of them was given to me as a gift, which I cherish. More at http://theghousediary.blogspot.com/2013/05/tippu-sultan-indias-brave-king-against.html

I sincerely hope the Government of India buys it and displays it in its Museum and take pride in our heritage of secular pluralistic leaders.

What a joy it is to connect with yourselves!

WHAT A JOY IT IS

What a joy it is to connect with the self… I was in my storage to clean out the stuff… while at it, I sank into old memories looking at things… found the negatives for the family pictures from the seventies.... my daughters “fluffy” and her Tiger painting when she was five… Bhagvad Gita in Urdu, Picture with Waheeda Rahman, Tippu Sultan’s brass but- one of the two made in his bi-centennial celebrations and  Mina’s horsey wood frame. Then I found my note book I wrote in the late sixties … 42 poems and 23 short stories in all!

I was way too eager to read my writings from 40 years ago, and wanted to see how much I have advanced since then…. tried to read while driving, then I remembered totaling my Jaguar, Park Avenue and BMW and said to myself,  No! I did not mind dying but did not want to disappoint my wife and my kids for stupidity – particularly when my grandson learns what happened. Now, they are going to be on my tail and wipe out my safety record. No tickets in the last four years!

So, I  decided to go to Apna Bazaar Restaurant and read there.  I was rather surprised that my recent write up on evolution-creation was identical to the one I wrote in 1971 called “Taqleeq” i.e., creation in Urdu language. Felt so good that I have been the same for the last 42 years… but also felt bad that I had not improved!

I told my friend about this, and he said “I have not seen any change in you; you’ve been the same pluralistic guy all your life.” He reminded my weekly visits to Buddhist temple, and Hindu Temple to join in the Bhajans (chanting) besides visiting the Mosque on Fridays – and he suggested to write about it. He and I started our life journey on parallel paths, and I am happy for him that he made it much bigger than I did, and that at times has driven me to catch up with him. He said, his first published peace was in the same year as mine – 1971.

Between 1976 and 1993 – that is seventeen years of time, I don’t remember writing anything substantial. I just cannot believe this. But then I published News paper from 1994-2001, and lost all the copies in archives…. So did not record any of my articles. Then in 1999 I started blogging at Sulekha Indian portal and have about 1000 pieces there and in all written over 2000 pieces and most of them are published in major news papers. I was written up first in Dallas Business Journal in 1991.

I wrote another piece called “Hubbul Watni – Patriotism in Urdu” on December 6, 1971 and sent for publication to some M.S.E. publications…cannot remember who it was. It was about the 1971 war between India and Pakistan.  I was worried what I might have written, was I hostile towards Pakistan?  I know I am not hostile towards any one, or any nation (except the severe disappointment with fellow party members like Ted Cruz) for the last 25 years that I have been in the public square.  My grilled fish got cold while I anxiously finished the item. Thank God, my inclusiveness was there some 42 years ago. I felt really good about it.  I have been able to influence and ready many people to be inclusive.

I cannot claim that I initiated inclusiveness in Dallas – but Asian News was the first local paper that was inclusive of all religions and all subcontinentians –that is people of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Then Asian News Radio was the first all inclusive radio as well. Now after twenty years, almost all the radio stations are inclusive, even those who were not at the beginning.

My poems were of romance in the beginning but moved on to social issues and the poet Sahir Ludhianavi has greatly influenced me in my writing.  He was pluralistic and inclusive of all faiths and traditions in his poetry.  I did not write poetry since 1977, but have resumed again since we held the Mushaera (poetry session) on Pluralism in Urdu and Hindi.

Government has no fault was the theme of the poem I wrote on May 28, 1972,  it was a satire on socialism, I still hold the same views, somewhat anti-government or lesser control on the public and greater freedom for the individual,  that makes me a solid Republican- the original ones (not the tea partiers)  but not like our honorable Senator Ted Cruz who does not respect our systems and the laws of our land.

Then came the point of exhilaration… I could not hold myself with joy, when I read my poem that I wrote on November 9, 1971… that has similar words and ring as in Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s hit number from the late 90’s.  Aap say milke hum kuch badal to gaye…

Hum un shoukh nigahon say wafa ki tamanna kar baithay,
Shoukh e deedar may diwanagi ki intiha kar baithay;

I built up lots of hopes from her smiles
intense desire to meet her made me crazy to no end;

Kabhi sanjeeda rahte, kabhi muskurate, kabhi gunguna detay
Un ki ek nigah e karam ke liye hum kya kya kar baithay;

sober at times, smiled at times and hummed at times with joy
just for her one merciful look, what all did I do

Rah-e- deed na bani Shakeel to tasavvar may basa liye,
Tasveer bhi aisi bani key, khud ko bhula kar baithay.

Could not find a way to visit her, so I housed her in my mind,
the image became so real that I forgot myself.

Thanks to Faiza and Fahad for doing all the work at storage, we cleaned up about 20% of the stuff…   and need to sell some stuff and give away some and retain some.

I am happy this evening with the connection I had with myself.  Do you connect with yourselves frequently? Try, it is absolute nirvana!

That’s it for now.

Tippu Sultan - India's brave king against the mighty British empire

I am honored to be a part of the History of the state of Karnataka, and a recipient of one of the two brass busts of Tippu Sultan made on the 200th commemoration. I am glad to be a part of the history, but I am not history yet.

Tippu Sultan's vision of India was Swaraj (self rule) not British Raj. He was killed in the 4th war of Mysore against the British on this day, May 4th 1799. History records that his confidant and assistant leaked the information to the British about Tippu’s whereabouts and that’s how the native kingdom fell to the colonists.

On the bi-centennial commemoration of his death in 1999, two brass busts were made. One is with former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, then Chief Minister Deve Gowda, and other one was presented to me by Dr. Range Gowda, an expert on Tippu Sultan and author of many books.

Indeed, when my father was running for the City council, it was festivity at our home, the public address systems (we called it loud speakers then) were set and Lavani (folk singing in Kannada Language) were sung, how Mir Sadiq, Tippu’s deputy betrayed him. I am trying to recall that in Kannada with failures. My father was also elected Mayor of the city back in 1952, and he was elected on the day I was born or vice-Versa.

Tippu was a secular King in the times when it was not a common thing. Dr. Gowda's research is an eye opener. Unfortunately, a few right wingers in India have maligned him for the excesses’ done by his fanatic deputies in Kerala and Mangalore, where they forced Hindus and Christians to convert to Islam. On the contrary, Tippu granted lands to build temples, and he defended the Sringeri Matt (Hindu Sanctuary) from attacks from Marathas, and has protected the Ranganatha Temple in Srirangapatna. Indeed, the first Christian church in the state was built in Mysore City with a land grant from Tippu Sultan that was before the British invaded. His deputy Poornayya was a Hindu.

In a free society, falsities come with the facts, and we have to live with it. I have been to all his places. Indeed his Toop Khana - the artillery depot sat next to my house in Yelahanka, the wall of our house joined the wall of Tippu's depot known as Chattra now - where they conduct weddings, and my sister’s wedding was conducted in it and my best friend Jaichand Sugalchand Sajjanraj Jain’s wedding was also conducted there.

When I was a kid, I messed with everything my Dad did, in front of our house, while digging for a wall, I jumped into the trench to dig foundation with axe, boom, one hit, and there was a massive hole. I screamed and came out of the trench, later it took truck loads of dirt to fill it in. and they said it was Tippu's tunnel. No one verified or reported that to anyone. Unfortunately that is not a custom in India. We don't value the old stuff unlike here in America, which would have become a heritage.

The house we lived was the house where Kempe Gowda, founder of Bangalore lived. I have asked my nephew to save the 500 year old rosewood columns and the arches, and I hope to do something with it. It is historical.

Tippu goes on the record as the only 2nd head of the state in human history that was on the front line of battle field defending his state. He also has a record among all the British colonies to be the only one who captured and imprisoned the British soldiers.

The Kingdom of Mysore was also among three nations in the world that recognized American Independence and apparently July 4th was celebrated in Sri Rangapatna, the State Capital of Mysore in 1776.

Don’t forget he is the father of Rockets and inventor of Torpedo, known as Bangalore Torpedo. The British and American scientists have given him due recognition. Indeed, India’s first satellite was made in Bangalore as well.

Thank you.
